Solemn September celebrations in the heart of the Val Fortore
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Baselice, a town of about two thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 620 meters in the upper Val Fortore, in the province of Benevento (Campania), the most awaited moment of the year arrives in early September with the solemn festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and Santa Lucia. It is the festival that brings families scattered across Northern Italy and abroad back to the village: for a few days, the streets of the historic center fill with lights, stalls, and music, while Marian devotion marks the days with religious celebrations and the procession.
The event is tied to September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, around which the civil and religious calendar is built. While the town's official patron saint remains Saint Leonard the Abbot, celebrated on November 6th, the September festival is the most deeply felt, as it falls during the period when the Baselice community is fully reunited.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie through the streets of the village, accompanied by a brass band and local brotherhoods, preceded by solemn Masses in the parish church and moments of prayer and family blessings. Baselice preserves a rich religious heritage linked to this devotion: the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, which houses the tomb of the feudal lord Ottavio Carafa, the parish church of Saint Leonard the Abbot, and the churches of Saint Anthony and the Madonna dell'Assunta.
The civil portion of the festivities revolves around Piazza Convento, a natural stage for the free evening concerts. Over the years, the square has hosted well-known names in Italian music: in September 2024, the band Nomadi performed, while previous editions featured the Ricchi e Poveri and the comedian N'Duccio. Alongside the concerts, the tradition of grand brass band concerts continues—such as those by the «Città di Francavilla Fontana» ensemble—with the band parading through the streets in the late afternoon and fireworks closing the evenings.
As in all festivals of the inner Sannio, the table is an integral part of the program. Over the years, the stalls set up in the village have offered:
The municipal territory, ranging from 303 to 966 meters in altitude on the left side of the Fortore river, still relies heavily on agriculture: cereals, olive oil, fruit, and above all wine, with moscato being its most iconic product. Visitors will find a festival where food is not just a commercial side-attraction, but a story of what is cultivated around the village.
The program traditionally alternates religious appointments with popular moments: the opening with church bells and pyrotechnics, entertainment and bouncy castles for children, the fair with stalls along the streets on the morning of September 8th, the parade to the war memorial with a wreath-laying ceremony, and the final lottery draw on the last evening. It is a family-friendly festival where children stay in the square until late and generations mingle in front of the stage.
Baselice is not on the beaten tourist path: precisely for this reason, its September festival retains an authentic character, unfiltered for the visitor. Those who choose it as a stop will discover a ridge-top village with views over the Fortore valley and the Cervaro stream, a centuries-old Marian tradition, and the hospitality typical of the upper Sannio towns, just a few kilometers from the borders with Puglia and Molise. It is an opportunity to understand how, in Campania, the patronal festival is still the true center of community life.
At the moment, the definitive dates for the 2026 festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and Santa Lucia in Baselice, in the upper Val Fortore in the province of Benevento, have not been published. The traditional reference is September 8th, with the days immediately preceding and following filled with the civil program.
The structure of the festival is well-established: solemn Masses in the parish church, a procession of the statue accompanied by a brass band and brotherhoods, a fair with stalls along the streets, the band parading in the late afternoon, free evening musical events in Piazza Convento, food stands with traditional Fortore cuisine, and fireworks to close the event.
To find out the dates, times, and guests for the 2026 edition, it is best to follow announcements from the Municipality of Baselice, the parish, and local social media channels: the official poster is usually released at the end of summer.
Baselice is best reached by car: the village is located in the upper Val Fortore, in the northern part of the province of Benevento, near the borders with Puglia and Molise, and is not served by a train station. The most convenient airport is Naples Capodichino. During the festivities, the historic center is largely closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave your car in the parking lots at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
Performances in Piazza Convento are traditionally free of charge. Food and drinks at the gastronomic stands and festivals are available for purchase at popular prices.
