About La Calderola Festival

Every year on February 1st and 2nd, Castel Baronia renews its most cherished tradition: the Madonna delle Fratte Festival, known locally as «la Calderola». A massive bonfire is lit in the square in front of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. delle Fratte, burning day and night until the end of the festivities under the watchful care of the faithful. Irpinian folk music, tastings of local products, and the procession of the «Brown Queen» complete a tradition that the Irpinian village traces back to 1137.

The most cherished festival in Castel Baronia

In the heart of the Irpinian winter, the small town of Castel Baronia, in the province of Avellino, Campania, gathers around its most ancient devotion: the Madonna delle Fratte Festival, which everyone in town simply calls «la Calderola». It is celebrated on February 1st and 2nd, the day the community commemorates the discovery of the image of the Virgin, traditionally dated to February 2, 1137. It is a patronal feast in the fullest sense of the term—religious, popular, and collective—capable of drawing pilgrims and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Baronia and the Ufita Valley.

The bonfire that burns day and night

The element that makes this event unique is the large bonfire lit in the square facing the sanctuary. The woodpile, blessed and ignited on the eve of the festival, continues to burn until the festivities conclude: it is never left alone, as groups of the faithful take turns watching over the fire day and night. The festival's local name, «la Calderola», derives from this enormous brazier, and in the fire, the community sees a symbol of its unity and the deep bond the people of Castel Baronia share with the Madonna delle Fratte, affectionately called the «Brown Queen».

A devotion born in 1137

Tradition tells that the image of the Virgin was found in a cave along the San Rocco ravine, where a monk from Montevergine had placed it for his prayers. Since every attempt to move it proved futile, the faithful concluded that it was divine will and that the sacred effigy should be venerated exactly where it was found. The title «delle Fratte» comes from the uncultivated land—covered in brambles, brushwood, and wild plants—where the image was discovered.

The Sanctuary of Maria SS. delle Fratte

The sanctuary overlooks Piazza Pasquale Stanislao Mancini in the center of the village. Its history is marked by the earthquakes that have repeatedly struck Irpinia: the tremors of 1694 and 1702 left little of it standing; the church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1856 and consecrated on October 28, 1867, only to be destroyed again by the 1930 earthquake. Rebuilt by 1933, it suffered further damage in 1962 and 1980, which was later repaired through structural reinforcements. The ancient stone portal is preserved on the exterior, while the interior houses a medieval Marian icon, the painting of the Madonna delle Fratte, and sculptures by Father Andrea Martini, an artist native to the village.

Folk music, procession, and tastings

Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival has a strong popular soul. On the eve of the festival, Piazza Mancini comes alive with traditional Irpinian music and dancing, and with tastings of local products served around the fire: in the 2025 edition, the entertainment was provided by the folk group «Zompa Cardillo» from Montemarano, carriers of the famous Montemarano tarantella. On the day of the festival, the pace becomes more solemn: in the afternoon, the procession carrying the image of the Madonna winds through the streets of the village, followed by a solemn celebration in the sanctuary.

Castel Baronia, a village in eastern Irpinia

Nestled at an altitude of about 640 meters and overlooking the Ufita Valley, Castel Baronia owes its name to the Norman-era castle that once guarded the territory of the Baronia of Vico. It is the birthplace of the jurist and statesman Pasquale Stanislao Mancini (1817), after whom the main square is named. The February festival and the Sant'Anna festival on July 26 have always marked the community's calendar and remain the best opportunity to discover this lesser-known corner of inland Campania.
