Madonna del Tufo Festival

A devotion spanning over five centuries

The Madonna del Tufo Festival is the most defining event for Rocca di Papa, a village in the Castelli Romani perched on the slopes of Monte Cavo, in the province of Rome (Lazio). Its roots date back to 1490: according to tradition, a massive boulder of tuff detached from the mountain and was about to crush a traveler, who invoked the Virgin Mary. The rock stopped just inches away from him. A small chapel was built on the exact spot where the stone came to rest, later expanded over the centuries into the Santuario della Madonna del Tufo. The original boulder is still preserved at the base of the building, featuring a niche with a fresco of the Madonna and Child attributed to Antoniazzo Romano.

When it takes place

The festival is traditionally celebrated on the third weekend of August, specifically the Saturday and Sunday following August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption. However, the celebrations begin much earlier: starting August 8th, the novena of prayer begins, a daily late-afternoon gathering that leads the community toward the main festivities. This schedule repeats every year, marking the rhythm of summer in Rocca di Papa.

The dawn procession

The most anticipated moment is the Sunday morning procession, which sets off while it is still dark, around 6:30 AM, from the 17th-century Duomo dell'Assunta, winding through the narrow streets of the historic center up to the Sanctuary. Hundreds of faithful, many arriving from across the Castelli Romani and Rome, walk by candlelight accompanied by Marian hymns as the town wakes up. Throughout the day, several Masses are held, culminating in the solemn late-afternoon Mass, often presided over by the Bishop.

The popular spirit of the festival

Beyond its religious dimension, the Madonna del Tufo is a grand community celebration. The evening program features:

• Performances in the local Rocchigiano dialect dedicated to the history and stories of the village;
• Theatrical monologues and storytelling by local artists and companies;
• Dance performances by local schools and musical shows featuring tributes to Italian music legends;
• A food stall serving sweet and savory treats, open throughout the festivities.

The closing ceremony has become a secular and spiritual ritual: a song for peace followed by the release of glowing prayers into the sky, creating a trail of light over the rooftops of Rocca di Papa and the crater of the Alban Hills.

Why it's worth the trip

Visitors will find much more than just a patronal feast. Rocca di Papa is one of the most beautiful natural balconies in Lazio: from the historic center, the view stretches over Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo, and, on clear days, all the way to the sea. Combining the festival with a walk toward Monte Cavo, a stop at a traditional fraschetta, and exploring the medieval Bastioni district offers an authentic glimpse of the Castelli Romani, far from mass tourism circuits.
