The patronal feast of Cannero Riviera and thousands of floating candles on Lake Maggiore
The Madonna del Carmine Feast is the patronal festival of Cannero Riviera, a charming village in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont, overlooking the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. The recurrence falls every year on the second Sunday of July, with the patron saint's day celebrated on the following Monday, drawing residents, vacationers, and tourists who bring the lakefront and historic center to life.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession winding through the village streets: the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried from the parish church in a parade, accompanied by the community in an atmosphere of reflection and participation that weaves together devotion and local identity.
The iconic image of the festival, however, is the Luminaria sul Lago, a tradition handed down for nearly sixty years. At dusk, volunteers place over five thousand floating candles—made from natural, non-polluting materials—onto the waters of Lake Maggiore in front of the village. The small flames glide slowly with the lake currents, creating a unique and magical scene that makes Cannero one of the most evocative viewpoints on Lake Verbano during this summer night.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to experience Cannero Riviera, a pearl of Lake Maggiore known for its mild microclimate, citrus and camellia gardens, and the view of the Castelli di Cannero emerging from the lake waters. Throughout the summer, the municipal calendar offers numerous initiatives—exhibitions, markets, live music, and cultural evenings—that frame the patronal feast.
An event that captures the soul of a lakeside village in Piedmont, where religious tradition and the beauty of Lake Maggiore merge into an unforgettable evening.
The 2026 Madonna del Carmine Feast in Cannero Riviera falls on the usual second weekend of July: Sunday, July 12, and Monday, July 13, 2026, with Monday dedicated to the patron saint's celebration.
Once again this year, the highlight will be the Luminaria sul Lago: at dusk, over five thousand floating candles will be placed on the waters of Lake Maggiore in front of the village, in a sixty-year-old tradition. The religious day is marked by the procession with the statue of the Madonna del Carmine along the village streets.
The detailed program—including the times for the procession and the Luminaria—will be announced by the organizers closer to the event. For updated information, you can contact the Cannero Riviera Tourist Office.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the times for the procession and the Luminaria sul Lago, will be announced by the Municipality of Cannero Riviera and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event. The traditional structure includes the patronal procession through the village streets and, at dusk, the placement of over five thousand floating candles on Lake Maggiore.
Cannero Riviera is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, along the Sempione state road (SS34) between Verbania and Cannobio. By car, it can be reached from the A26 motorway (Verbania/Gravellona Toce exit), then continuing along the lake. By train, the most convenient station is Verbania-Pallanza, from which you can continue by bus or car; alternatively, you can arrive via the lake using the Navigazione Lago Maggiore ferries.
The Luminaria takes place at dusk: it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot along the lakefront to admire the candles on the water. Parking in the center is limited on festival evenings, so it is better to plan on walking.
