On April 26th, Ogliastro Cilento celebrates its patron saint: an unbroken devotion since 1827

Every year, on April 26th, the village of Ogliastro Cilento gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, also referred to in official municipal records as Maria Santissima Madre di Dio. The anniversary has been celebrated continuously since 1827 and remains one of the most heartfelt events in this corner of Campania, in the province of Salerno, just a few kilometers from Agropoli and the gateway to the Cilento region.
The focal point of the celebration is the Church of Santa Croce, the only one in the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania to bear such a direct reference to the Christian symbol. The Romanesque structure features a central nave and two side aisles, housing exquisite frescoes attributed to Michele Ragolia. Here, the polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio is kept and venerated; on the day of the festival, it leaves the temple to be carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center.
The structure of the festival has remained largely unchanged over time and is divided into two days.
The novena preceding the event accompanies the community in the days immediately prior and is the moment when the participation of residents, including those who return for the occasion, becomes most intense.
The name Ogliastro derives from oleastrum, the wild olive tree: according to historian Pietro Ebner, the town is literally the "village of olive trees," and extra virgin olive oil remains a central feature of local identity and the economy today. The inhabited center is located at an altitude of about 365 meters and dominates a panorama that stretches from the Gulf of Salerno to the Soprano, Vesole, and Stella mountains. The municipal territory includes the hamlets of Eredita and Finocchito, the noble De Stefano and De Falco palaces, the chapel of San Rocco, and the ruins of the San Leonardo convent, founded in 1636 by the Dominicans and later passed to the Franciscan Observants.
The program is released every year by the Municipality of Ogliastro Cilento and the Festival Committee, which publish the flyer on official channels and social media in the weeks leading up to April 26th. Before traveling, it is always advisable to check times and appointments, as the civic calendar may be subject to changes.
The Patronal Feast of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio is linked to a fixed date in the local liturgical calendar, April 26th, observed in Ogliastro Cilento since 1827. As of the writing of this sheet, no official program for the 2026 edition has been published online: the sheet is therefore maintained with an indicative date, pending the flyer from the Festival Committee.
When the program is released, it is reasonable to expect the usual structure: preparatory novena, a musical event on the eve, the morning Eucharistic celebration, the arrival of the band in the afternoon, and the solemn Holy Mass followed by the procession through the village streets. All events are traditionally free of charge.

By car: Take the Battipaglia exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then the SS18 towards Agropoli and the provincial road to Ogliastro Cilento. By train: Agropoli-Castellabate or Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo stations on the Tyrrhenian line, then bus or taxi. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport, or Naples Capodichino about 130 km away.
All events of the patronal feast are free of charge, including both religious celebrations and outdoor civic and musical events.
The village is small: it is best to park at the entrance to the town and continue on foot, especially during the procession hours. April in Cilento can be cool in the evening, so it is better to bring a light jacket. Local accommodation consists mainly of bed & breakfasts and farmhouses (agriturismi), many of which are recommended by the Municipality.
