About Madonna del Buon Consiglio Feast

Every April 26th, Ogliastro Cilento, a village of olive groves overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, pays homage to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, the patron saint venerated in the Church of Santa Croce and celebrated without interruption since 1827. Two days that weave together religious rites and civic festivities: the novena, the eve concert, the solemn Mass, the brass band, and the procession through the village streets. It is the defining festival of this community in the province of Salerno.

A devotion lasting since 1827

Every year, on April 26th, the village of Ogliastro Cilento gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, also referred to in official municipal records as Maria Santissima Madre di Dio. The anniversary has been celebrated continuously since 1827 and remains one of the most heartfelt events in this corner of Campania, in the province of Salerno, just a few kilometers from Agropoli and the gateway to the Cilento region.

The Church of Santa Croce, the heart of the festival

The focal point of the celebration is the Church of Santa Croce, the only one in the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania to bear such a direct reference to the Christian symbol. The Romanesque structure features a central nave and two side aisles, housing exquisite frescoes attributed to Michele Ragolia. Here, the polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio is kept and venerated; on the day of the festival, it leaves the temple to be carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center.

Two days between the sacred and the secular

The structure of the festival has remained largely unchanged over time and is divided into two days.

  • The Eve (April 25th): A cultural moment in the square or church, with concerts that in recent years have favored operatic and chamber repertoires.
  • The Patron Saint's Day (April 26th): Morning Eucharistic celebration, arrival of the brass band in the afternoon, solemn Holy Mass, and evening procession through the village streets.
  • Civic festivities: The band parades through the village, accompanied by illuminations, musical performances, and, when scheduled, a concluding fireworks display.

The novena preceding the event accompanies the community in the days immediately prior and is the moment when the participation of residents, including those who return for the occasion, becomes most intense.

The village of olive groves

The name Ogliastro derives from oleastrum, the wild olive tree: according to historian Pietro Ebner, the town is literally the "village of olive trees," and extra virgin olive oil remains a central feature of local identity and the economy today. The inhabited center is located at an altitude of about 365 meters and dominates a panorama that stretches from the Gulf of Salerno to the Soprano, Vesole, and Stella mountains. The municipal territory includes the hamlets of Eredita and Finocchito, the noble De Stefano and De Falco palaces, the chapel of San Rocco, and the ruins of the San Leonardo convent, founded in 1636 by the Dominicans and later passed to the Franciscan Observants.

Why attend

  • An authentic patronal feast, without tourist filters, where the community is the protagonist.
  • The best opportunity to visit the Church of Santa Croce and its frescoes.
  • Cilento inland cuisine: extra virgin olive oil, vegetables, homemade pasta, and traditional desserts.
  • An ideal base for discovering Agropoli, Paestum, and the Cilento coast during the mildest season of the year.

Information and updates

The program is released every year by the Municipality of Ogliastro Cilento and the Festival Committee, which publish the flyer on official channels and social media in the weeks leading up to April 26th. Before traveling, it is always advisable to check times and appointments, as the civic calendar may be subject to changes.
