Riolunato's Summer New Year's Eve, between music and solidarity
LunaRio Fest is the most anticipated summer festival in Riolunato, a small Apennine municipality in the province of Modena, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. The locals affectionately call it "Summer New Year's Eve": for an entire weekend in early July, the historic center transforms into a large open-air stage, with music, shows, good food, and a festive atmosphere that involves the entire village.
The event was born in July 2010 from the initiative of a group of local young people together with the municipal administration, with the idea of promoting Riolunato and its heritage. Over the years, LunaRio has grown to become a major event for the entire Modenese mountains, attracting thousands of visitors from neighboring towns and the plains.
The streets and squares of the village host live concerts, cover bands, DJ sets, and dance evenings that continue until late at night. There are also street artists โ fire-eaters, jugglers, stilt walkers โ and, from the afternoon, entertainment dedicated to the little ones with workshops, games, and face painting. Completing the offer are numerous food stalls, food trucks, and bars with typical Apennine dishes and specialties for all tastes.
LunaRio is not just a festival: since 2013, the event has collaborated with the voluntary sector and donates part of its proceeds to ASEOP (Association for the Support of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology), which works alongside children and families in the pediatric oncohematology department of the Policlinico di Modena. Participating in LunaRio therefore means having fun while supporting a good cause: as the festival's slogan reminds us, it's even more beautiful when fun is combined with solidarity.
Organized by the Associazione Lunario di Maggio with the support of the Municipality of Riolunato, LunaRio Fest is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Apennine village in a festive mood, amidst tradition, good food, and music under the stars.
Riolunato's Summer New Year's Eve returns on Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th, 2026, for its fourteenth edition. For two days, the historic center will come alive with concerts, DJ sets, street artists, workshops, and entertainment for children, as well as the numerous food stalls and food trucks that characterize the festival.
As tradition dictates, the event will maintain its solidarity spirit: part of the proceeds will be donated to ASEOP projects for pediatric oncohematology. The artist lineup and schedule will be announced by the Associazione Lunario di Maggio in the weeks leading up to the event, via the official website and social media channels.
Riolunato is located in the upper Modenese Apennines, along the SS12 road (Abetone and Brenner Pass). By car, it can be reached from Modena by driving up the Scoltenna valley (about 1 hour). The nearest train station is PievepelagoโRiolunato on the Apennine railway line, connected by local buses.
Admission to the festival is free; events take place in the squares and streets of the historic center from late afternoon until night. Food and drinks from stalls are paid and contribute to the charitable fundraising.
It is advisable to arrive early to park in the designated areas outside the center and to bring a sweatshirt for the cool mountain evenings. For overnight stays, you can use the accommodation facilities in Riolunato and the nearby towns of Pievepelago and Fanano.
