The international ancient crossbow shooting tournament in the medieval setting of Volterra
On the fourth weekend of August, the monumental Piazza dei Priori in Volterra, located in the heart of the province of Pisa, transforms into a medieval tournament field. The Ludus Balistris - Crossbowmen's Palio draws the most renowned crossbowmen companies in Italy to this Tuscan Etruscan city, all gathered to compete for the palio in one of the most prestigious national and international ancient crossbow shooting contests.
The event is organized by the Compagnia Balestrieri della Città di Volterra, under the patronage of the Municipality of Volterra and the Tuscany Region, and is officially registered in the Tuscan regional register of historical re-enactments. The event recreates the period between 1320 and 1350, when the crossbow was a decisive weapon in the history of the free communes and Volterra's crossbowmen enjoyed great fame. Since its first edition in 1998, the Ludus Balistris has combined philological accuracy in costumes with the spectacle of the competition.
The evening begins with a spectacular historical pageant that winds through the city center: over three hundred participants in period costumes parade to the sound of trumpets and drums, organized into three groups—the Crossbowmen's Company, the Contrade Committee, and the Historical Flag-wavers Group—before converging in the square in a triumph of color and sound.
The tournament consists of two main events: the team competition, where each company fields its twelve best shooters aiming at a target only 15 centimeters in diameter, and the corniolo (dogwood) final, which crowns the best individual crossbowman among the four strongest shooters from each team. Historically participating companies include the Società dei Terzieri Massetani (Massa Marittima), the Compagnia Balestrieri di Porta San Marco, the crossbowmen of Lucca and Pisa, the Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, and the hosts from Volterra. Flag-waver performances and choreography complete the show.
Attending the Ludus Balistris means experiencing Volterra, a Tuscan art jewel, in its most evocative form: the medieval walls, the alabaster, and the illuminated Palazzo dei Priori provide a natural backdrop for an evening that blends sport, tradition, and local identity. Admission is free.
The Ludus Balistris 2026 returns to Volterra on the fourth weekend of August, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd, in the setting of Piazza dei Priori. The challenge brings together six national-level crossbowmen companies: the Società dei Terzieri Massetani, the Compagnia Balestrieri di Porta San Marco, the crossbowmen of Lucca and Pisa, the Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, and the Compagnia Balestrieri della Città di Volterra. As per tradition, the evening opens with the historical costume pageant and continues with the team competition and the individual corniolo final. Admission is free.
Details regarding the entertainment for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Crossbowmen's Company in the weeks leading up to the event.
Volterra does not have a direct train station: the closest is Saline di Volterra (connected to the center by bus) or Pontedera-Casciana Terme on the Florence-Pisa line, with bus connections to Volterra. By car, take the Florence-Pisa-Livorno (FI-PI-LI) highway exit at Pontedera, then follow the provincial road (SP) to Volterra.
The competition takes place in Piazza dei Priori in the evening (historical pageant starts around 9:00 PM). Admission is free.
Arrive early to secure a spot in the square and use the paid parking lots just outside the city walls. Wear comfortable shoes for the staircases of the historic center.
