The Luchticha Kischta: The Kirchtag of Luttach

The Luchticha Kischta is the Kirchtag—the traditional village festival of South Tyrol—held in Luttach, a village in the Ahrntal municipality, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. It takes place every year in early July at the Festplatz, the village festival grounds at the end of the Tures and Ahrntal valleys. The event is managed by the Kischtamichlverein Luttach, a volunteer association dedicated to preserving local customs and traditions (Brauchtumsverein).

The Kischtamichl Tree Ritual

The heart of the festival is the ancient Kischtamichl ritual (known in German as Kirchtagmichl), a symbol shared by many Kirchtags in the Puster Valley and Ahrntal. On Saturday afternoon, members drag a long trunk to the square: around 2 PM, the Kischtamichl tree is raised, topped with a straw effigy dressed in a white shirt, a hat, and a bottle of wine. According to tradition, the taller the tree, the prouder the village is of its festival; the effigy must then be guarded all night to prevent youths from neighboring villages from stealing it.

Two Days of Celebration

The Luchticha Kischta spans two days, Saturday and Sunday:

• Saturday: Dragging and raising of the Kischtamichl tree (from approx. 2 PM), followed by dancing with live music from 6 PM.
• Sunday: Brunch and concert from 11 AM, dancing from early afternoon (1 PM), and around 6 PM, the traditional raffle (Verlosung), where the Kischtamichl tree and numerous other prizes are up for grabs.

Folk music, South Tyrolean culinary specialties, and the convivial atmosphere of the Luttach community provide the backdrop for the event, which attracts both valley residents and tourists vacationing in the Ahrntal region.

The Kirchtag in South Tyrolean Tradition

The Kirchtag has its roots in the church consecration feast or the patron saint's day: after the religious portion, the day continues with a secular celebration open to the entire village. In the Ahrntal, this custom is still very much alive, and every village has its own Kischta: alongside the one in Luttach, there is the Ahrna Kischta in San Giovanni, the Jougiba Kischta in San Giacomo, and the Stochasa Kischta in Cadipietra. The Luchticha Kischta is one of the most deeply rooted events in the summer calendar of the Ahrntal municipality.
