The Passion of Christ re-enacted through the alleys of a medieval village in the Nebrodi Mountains
The Living Via Crucis of Raccuja is one of the most heartfelt sacred re-enactments in the Nebrodi area, held in the municipality of Raccuja, in the province of Messina, Sicily. Every spring, in the days leading up to Easter, the medieval village turns into a true open-air Jerusalem: the ancient streets of the historic center, the squares, and the church courtyards become the natural stage for the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ.
The performance begins in the evocative setting of the Church of San Sebastiano, where the Last Supper and the Agony in the Garden are staged. From there, the procession winds through the village's characteristic alleys, stopping at Raccuja's most iconic landmarks:
The climax of the re-enactment is reached in the San Marco district, where the Crucifixion, Death, Deposition, and Resurrection of Jesus conclude the journey, inspired by the Gospel of Saint John.
What makes this Via Crucis unique is the collective participation of the entire community: over one hundred participants, all residents of Raccuja of all ages, work with passion to offer an immersive experience to visitors arriving from across the region. The costumes, set design, and the atmosphere of the medieval village on the slopes of the Nebrodi contribute to a performance of great emotional and spiritual impact.
The initiative is promoted by the Santa Maria di Gesù Parish, with the collaboration of the Circolo Anspi and the patronage of the Municipality of Raccuja. Established in 2023, the event has quickly become an eagerly awaited appointment of the Holy Week in the Nebrodi, dedicated to the memory of Father Domenico Tuccio and Emilio Carullo.

The concluding moment, with the Crucifixion, Death, Deposition, and Resurrection, took place in the San Marco district, inspired by the Gospel of Saint John.
