About Living Via Crucis Centola

The Living Via Crucis of Centola is a dramatic reenactment of the Passion of Christ that transforms the historic center of this Cilento village into an open-air theater every Good Friday. The procession begins at the Museum of Testimonies and Memory, winding through narrow alleys, squares, and stairways, accompanied by performers, atmospheric lighting, and profound silence. Promoted by the San Nicola di Bari Parish in collaboration with the Municipality of Centola and the Pro Loco Centola Palinuro, it is one of the most heartfelt events of Holy Week in Cilento, where faith becomes a collective narrative for the entire community.

The Passion performed through the streets of Centola

Every year, on the evening of Good Friday, the village of Centola—located in the Province of Salerno, in the heart of Cilento, Campania—transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Living Via Crucis retraces the final moments of Christ's life along a route through the town, accompanied by lights, silence, and an atmosphere that invites deep reflection. This is not a performance in the conventional sense: it is an act of devotion that involves both the actors and the audience, restoring the town square to its ancient role as a place where the community shares its story.

The route: from the Museum of Memory to the historic center

The procession starts at the Museum of Testimonies and Memory, a space established by the Municipality of Centola to preserve the objects, voices, and crafts of Cilento’s rural culture. From here, the procession winds through the alleys, arches, and stairways of the historic center, which become the Praetorium, Golgotha, or the road to Calvary. The use of urban spaces as a natural backdrop is the hallmark of the event: no stages, no curtains, just the stones of the village illuminated for the occasion.

Performers, volunteers, and the community

The reenactment involves local performers and volunteers who spend weeks working on costumes, lighting, music, and rehearsals. The scale of this tradition is clear from the figures of documented editions: in the San Nicola di Centola district, the second edition of the Living Via Crucis took place on March 29, 2024, with 65 actors, a 1,200-meter route, and a two-hour retelling of the Passion built on acting, music, and dramatic staging. These numbers demonstrate how deeply felt the event is throughout the municipal territory.

A tradition spread across the Municipality

The territory of Centola includes several districts—including Palinuro, San Nicola, Foria, Caprioli, and San Severino—and the Living Via Crucis has taken root there in various, almost itinerant forms. In Palinuro, for instance, the sacred representation starts from Piazza Virgilio and is organized by the Pro Loco Palinuro together with the Parish of Santa Maria di Loreto, with the patronage of the Municipality of Centola. Experiencing Holy Week here means finding, just a few kilometers apart, multiple communities staging the same story, each with its own voice.

Organizers

  • San Nicola di Bari Parish of Centola — event promoter;
  • Municipality of Centola — organizational support and patronage;
  • Pro Loco Centola Palinuro — hospitality, logistics, and communication.

Why it is worth the trip

Those who arrive in Cilento in spring find a region still far from the summer crowds: the ancient village of Centola is nestled on a hill, just minutes from the sea, and on Good Friday evening, it takes on a unique character with dimmed lights and the slow pace of the procession. It is a precious opportunity to understand how Holy Week is experienced in the Campanian hinterland, where religious ritual intertwines with local memory and a popular theatricality passed down from generation to generation.

Centola beyond Good Friday

The Municipality of Centola is best known for the seaside district of Palinuro and its promontory, but the main town preserves a medieval historic center that is well worth a visit. The entire territory is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, one of the largest in Italy: those attending the Living Via Crucis can easily combine the Good Friday event with a few days exploring the coast, hiking trails, and Cilento cuisine.

The 2026 edition

Good Friday in 2026 fell on April 3rd, and Centola, in Cilento, renewed its appointment with the Living Via Crucis. At 8:00 PM, the procession departed from the Museum of Testimonies and Memory to traverse the historic center of the municipality, in the Province of Salerno.

The performance brought to life the final moments of Christ's life with local performers and volunteers, highlighting the care put into the staging and the ability to transform urban spaces into a true open-air theater. Calibrated lighting, silence, and a slow pace accompanied the audience along the entire route.

A community evening
