About Living Via Crucis Melito

On Palm Sunday, Melito Irpino relives the Passion of Christ with the Living Via Crucis: local men, women, and children become performers in a journey of faith that unfolds on the churchyard of the mother church of Sant'Egidio Abate. Promoted by the parish led by Father Michele Puopolo, the performance brings together the entire village in the Ufita Valley, in the province of Avellino, for an intense and deeply felt experience that blends popular devotion, community theater, and Irpinian tradition.

The Passion of Christ in the heart of the Ufita Valley

When Palm Sunday opens Holy Week, Melito Irpino transforms into a vast open-air sacred space. The Living Via Crucis is not a theatrical show in the common sense of the term: it is a journey of faith that the community takes together, with their own faces and voices, in front of the mother church of Sant'Egidio Abate. The small town in the province of Avellino, in Campania, thus becomes one of the places where the rites of the Irpinian Holy Week are experienced with the greatest intensity.

An initiative born from the parish

The performance is promoted by the Parish of Sant'Egidio Abate, led by Father Michele Puopolo, who has made it one of the most anticipated events of the Melito liturgical year. "It is not just a performance. It is a journey," the parish priest explained on the eve of the 2026 edition, describing the event as "a living, authentic experience capable of touching the soul." Behind every edition are weeks of rehearsals, costume preparation, and staging: work made, to use his words again, of "silent sacrifices and guarded emotions."

Men, women, and children on stage

The distinctive feature of the Living Via Crucis in Melito is the cross-generational participation of the village. There are no professional actors: the people themselves, of all ages, give body to the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Christ, in an interweaving of generations that is a message in itself.

  • Performers of all ages: men, women, and children from the parish community;
  • Costumes and sets crafted by hand in the months leading up to Holy Week;
  • The churchyard of the mother church as a natural stage, with the square crowded with faithful and visitors;
  • An emotional journey that culminates in the crucifixion and Resurrection, the most attended moments of the evening.

The churchyard of Sant'Egidio as a stage

The choice of the churchyard is not accidental: the mother church of Sant'Egidio Abate, in Piazza della Repubblica, is the civic and religious heart of the town. Here, the audience does not simply watch. As Father Puopolo says, it is a moment where "you don't just look: you feel, you walk through it." The late afternoon light giving way to the evening, the silence that descends on the square, and then the long applause that accompanies the Resurrection are as much a part of the experience as the scenes performed.

Inside the Melito Holy Week

The Living Via Crucis is the first act of a week dense with rites that retain a rare power in Melito Irpino. In the following days, the community gathers for the Dressing of Mary Most Holy of Sorrows, an ancient ritual celebrated in the mother church, and then for the Good Friday procession of the Paschal Triduum. It is a calendar that holds together faith, family memory, and the identity of the village: those who participate once understand why Holy Week in Melito is not considered a simple event on the calendar.

Melito Irpino, a village with two stories

Melito Irpino has just under two thousand inhabitants and is located in the Ufita Valley, in eastern Irpinia, at an altitude of about 460 meters. The medieval core, now known as Melito Vecchia, was damaged by the 1962 earthquake and subsequently abandoned: the current town is the result of that reconstruction. Precisely for this reason, religious traditions here have a particularly strong identity value, because they represent the thread that connects the new town to its most ancient history. The municipality also includes the hamlets of Cozza, Fontana del Bosco, and Incoronata, while the patron saint, Sant'Egidio Abate, is celebrated on September 1st.

Why it is worth attending

Those who arrive from outside will find an event without tourist superstructure: no tickets, no grandstands, no spectacular scenery. Instead, there is an entire village that puts itself out there to tell its faith, with a sincerity that strikes even non-believers. For the visitor, it is also an opportunity to discover a less-traveled Irpinia, that of the Ufita Valley, made of small villages, cultivated hills, and a still very authentic peasant cuisine.

Living Via Crucis Melito โ€” edition 2026

The third edition of the Living Via Crucis of Melito Irpino took place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Palm Sunday, starting at 6:00 PM on the churchyard of the mother church of Sant'Egidio Abate. Local men, women, and children gave face to the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Christ before a crowded square, amidst moments of deep emotion, long final applause, and tears of joy despite the cold.

Third edition: March 29, 2026

The Living Via Crucis of Melito Irpino returned on Palm Sunday 2026, March 29, with its third edition. The appointment, set for 6:00 PM on the churchyard of the mother church of Sant'Egidio Abate, concluded a day that began in the morning with the Palm procession, which saw the direct involvement of the children of the parish community.

A crowded square

The performance, promoted by the Parish of Sant'Egidio Abate with Father Michele Puopolo, attracted a large audience. According to local reports, the scenes of the crucifixion and the Resurrection of Christ were particularly engaging, greeted by prolonged applause. The figure of the Sorrowful Mother before the dead Christ was also deeply felt.

The continuation of Holy Week

A few days later, on Holy Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the crowded mother church hosted the rite of the Dressing of Mary Most Holy of Sorrows: the dress, faithfully reconstructed based on period photographs, was made free of charge by the Atelier Pantheon of Grottaminarda, by Michela Ferriero and Lorenzo Albanese. The rite prepared the Good Friday procession of the Paschal Triduum.
