About Living Passion

Every year on Good Friday, Pesco Sannita relives the final hours of Christ through the Living Passion: an itinerant performance that winds through the alleys and historic courtyards of the village, transformed for the occasion into an open-air theater. Promoted by the SS. Salvatore Parish with the support of the municipal administration, it involves residents of all ages through elaborate sets, costumes, and performances. In 2026, the event took place on Friday, April 3rd, starting at 7:00 PM.

A tradition that renews the identity of Pesco Sannita

In the heart of the Sannio region, just a few kilometers from Benevento, the small village of Pesco Sannita experiences one of its most intense collective moments on Good Friday, when the streets of the historic center host the Living Passion. This is not merely a religious reenactment: for the local community, it is a vital appointment of identity and participation, renewed each year thanks to the work of parish volunteers and the involvement of citizens of all ages.

The historic center as an open-air theater

The performance route winds through the alleys and historic courtyards of the village, which for one evening turn into a true open-air theater. The final hours of Our Lord are staged along public streets, without a stage or seating: the audience moves along with the actors, following the scenes of the Passion amidst stone walls, arches, and the small squares of the hillside village. Sets, costumes, and performances are entirely crafted within the village, with preparations spanning the weeks leading up to Easter and involving entire families.

An organizational machine built by volunteers

The initiative was born within the SS. Salvatore Parish, the village's mother church, and is coordinated by the parish board with the constant guidance of the parish priest, Father Daniele. Alongside the parish, the Municipal Administration, local businesses, and citizens contribute their time, spaces, and materials. It is an organizational model typical of small Sannio towns, where the success of an event depends almost entirely on volunteer work.

  • Organization: SS. Salvatore Parish Board
  • Support: Municipality of Pesco Sannita, local businesses, and the local community
  • Performers: Residents of all ages with ties to the village
  • Setting: Streets, historic courtyards, and buildings of the center

The 2026 Edition

The 2026 edition took place on Friday, April 3rd, Good Friday, starting at 7:00 PM. The evening timing guides the performance toward dusk, when the interplay of light and shadow in the alleys adds power to the staging. The community worked for weeks on the preparation of the living tableaux, as in previous editions.

Pesco Sannita, a village in the Benevento Fortore area

Pesco Sannita is a municipality of just under two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Benevento, in Campania, situated at an altitude of about 390 meters on a ridge overlooking the Tammaro Valley, along the route that climbs from the Sannio capital toward the Fortore area. The patron saint is Saint Nicholas, celebrated on December 6th. The local calendar includes other deeply felt events, from the Paccozza Festival in mid-August, organized by the Pro Loco, to winter initiatives linked to rural traditions: however, the Living Passion remains the event that most stirs the entire village.

Why it is worth attending

Visitors will find an authentic reenactment, not staged for tourism: no tickets, no grandstands, just a village telling its story through an ancient rite. It is also an opportunity to discover a corner of the inland Sannio often ignored by classic Campania itineraries, where Holy Week still marks the rhythm of community life. Those wishing to complete the experience can combine the visit with other performances in the area: on the same day, several towns in the Benevento region offer processions and living Via Crucis.

Living Passion 2026 in Pesco Sannita

On April 3, 2026, Good Friday, Pesco Sannita renewed its performance of the Passion along the streets of the historic center. The event, scheduled for 7:00 PM, brought the final hours of Christ to life amidst alleys, arches, and the facades of the village's historic buildings, which served as a natural backdrop.

As every year, the preparation involved the community in creating sets, costumes, and performances. Coordination was entrusted to the SS. Salvatore Parish board—Chiara, Maria, Grazia, Antimo, Virginio, Annalisa, and Graziella—with the guidance of the parish priest, Father Daniele, and the support of the municipal administration, citizens, and local businesses.
