The medieval village in the Monti Prenestini transforms into Bethlehem, between Castello Brancaccio and alleys carved into the tuff rock
The Living Nativity of San Gregorio da Sassola is one of the most evocative Nativity representations in the Lazio region. Since 1998, during the period between Boxing Day and Epiphany, the small medieval village perched on the Monti Prenestini, in the Metropolitan City of Rome, transforms into a Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. In 2025-2026, the event reached its 26th edition, confirming itself as a highly anticipated appointment deeply rooted in the town's identity.
What makes this living nativity unique is its setting. The entrance is through Castello Brancaccio, an imposing medieval fortress that dominates the village and serves as a scenic backdrop for the entire performance. From here, via a staircase carved into the tuff, the route winds through the alleys of the historic center, small squares, stairways, and ancient cellars carved into the tuff rock, which become natural theatrical stages for the scenes of the re-enactment.
Along the way, over 100 costumed participants bring a true journey to the year zero to life: scenes of daily life, workshops, and ancient crafts — from shepherds to artisans — accompany the visitor to the Nativity manger. Visitors walk through the scenes in a quiet, intimate atmosphere, wrapped in the warm Christmas climate of the illuminated village. The representation involves the entire local community, which takes care of every aspect of the setup, from the scenery to the hospitality, and attracts an average of at least 1,500 visitors per edition.
In the 2025-2026 edition, the nativity of San Gregorio da Sassola was one of the stages of MneMosine, a traveling festival dedicated to living nativities in historic villages promoted by the DMO Terre di Otium together with the nearby town of Poli. On December 26, 2025, the two performances took place in succession — Poli in the early afternoon and San Gregorio following — with a free shuttle from Tivoli for visitors; the repeat on January 6, 2026, closed the festival right in San Gregorio da Sassola.
The Municipality of San Gregorio da Sassola, with a few hundred inhabitants a short distance from Tivoli, preserves two distinct historic centers: the medieval core perched on the tuff base and the 17th-century Borgo Pio, separated by Castello Brancaccio. A land of ancient religious traditions, saints, and hermits, San Gregorio finds in the living nativity the most authentic synthesis of its identity: a community festival that unites faith, history, and heritage, and represents one of the most genuine Christmas experiences in the Lazio Region.
Participation is free. The performances are held in the afternoon, with the route opening around 3:30 PM. The event is organized by the municipal administration with the involvement of the town's associations and volunteers.
The 26th edition of the Living Nativity of San Gregorio da Sassola, inaugurated on December 26, 2025, concluded with the traditional repeat on January 6, 2026, on the day of Epiphany. The appointment also closed the traveling festival MneMosine, promoted by the DMO Terre di Otium to enhance the living nativities of the historic villages between Poli and San Gregorio da Sassola.
The route, opening in the afternoon, welcomed visitors from the entrance of Castello Brancaccio: through the staircase carved into the tuff, the public walked through alleys and ancient cellars animated by over 100 costumed participants, among scenes of daily life, ancient crafts, and the representation of the Nativity. Participation was free, with a free shuttle from Tivoli upon reservation.
By car: from Rome, take the A24 motorway and exit at Tivoli or Castel Madama, then follow signs for San Gregorio da Sassola (about 40 km from the center of Rome). Parking is available near the village, with pedestrian access to the nativity route.
Shuttle: for the MneMosine festival, a free shuttle service was activated from Tivoli (Piazzale delle Nazioni Unite), upon reservation while seats last.
Free entry. The route opens in the afternoon, around 3:30 PM. Comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are recommended: the route crosses alleys, stairways, and passages in the tuff rock.
