The Nativity comes to life in the village alleys, amidst torches and ancient crafts
In the heart of the Lazio sub-Apennines, between Piglio, Trevi nel Lazio, and the Altipiani di Arcinazzo, the village of Arcinazzo Romano, in the province of Rome, preserves one of the most heartfelt Nativity representations in the area. The Living Nativity, organized by the Ser Cola Bactista Cultural Association together with its tireless volunteers, turns the streets of the historic center into a grand village that takes you back in time every year.
Walking along the alleys and small squares of the town, lit only by the warm glow of torches, spectators relive the episodes of the Gospel accompanied by a narrator and a delicate musical background. The mountain overlooking the village is also illuminated, creating a natural backdrop of great impact. The atmosphere is that of an ancient village with a medieval feel, where even the old cellars of the town are opened to the public.
The heart of the event is the hundreds of participants who recreate the daily life of the past. Along the route, you will encounter numerous traditional trades:
Around these scenes, the Nativity takes shape, with the Holy Family, the shepherds, and the three Magi, in a display curated in every detail.
With over thirty editions behind it, the Living Nativity is now a fixed appointment in the Christmas calendar of Arcinazzo Romano and the entire Aniene Valley. The event traditionally takes place on two dates, December 26th and in the first days of January, close to Epiphany. The event, which is also widely followed via live streaming, has been repeatedly praised by the municipal administration as a "beautiful and evocative" representation, the result of the commitment of the village's volunteers, participants, and collaborators.
Free and suitable for the whole family, the Living Nativity of Arcinazzo Romano offers an authentic way to experience Christmas, far from the commercial lights of big cities: an entire village that, for one evening, returns to being the village of Bethlehem, amidst faith, rural memory, and community warmth.
The 31st edition of the Living Nativity of Arcinazzo Romano, organized by the Ser Cola Bactista Cultural Association, featured two evenings of performances on December 26, 2025, and January 4, 2026.
Along the streets of the historic center, illuminated by torches, hundreds of participants brought the Nativity scenes and the village's ancient crafts to life: from the baker to the cobbler, from the blacksmith to the embroiderer. On the opening night, the main roles were played by Arianna Orlandi (the Madonna), Paolo Lozzi (Saint Joseph), and little Irene Lozzi (Baby Jesus), accompanied by the three Magi. The event was also broadcast via live streaming.
Two evening appointments along the alleys of the historic center, with the route starting in the evening (from approximately 5:30 PM):
The route includes living tableaux of ancient crafts (baker, cobbler, blacksmith, embroiderer, washerwoman), old cellars open to the public, and the final scene of the Holy Family with the Magi, all accompanied by a narrator and musical background.
Arcinazzo Romano is located in the Aniene Valley, in the province of Rome. By car, it can be reached from the A24 motorway (Vicovaro-Mandela exit), continuing along the Via Sublacense towards Subiaco and the Altipiani di Arcinazzo. The historic center, where the nativity takes place, is pedestrianized during the event: it is advisable to park in the areas indicated at the entrance to the town.
The event is held during the Christmas period, generally on December 26th and on a date between January 4th and 6th, in the evening (from approximately 5:30 PM).
Admission is free. Warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended for walking through the alleys.
