A living nativity scene set within the medieval alleys of Acquarica, in Lower Salento
During the Christmas season, the village of Acquarica, a district of the municipality of Presicce-Acquarica in the province of Lecce, becomes the natural stage for one of the most beloved living nativity scenes in Lower Salento. Among the stones of the historic center, narrow alleys, courtyards, and votive columns, over one hundred performers bring to life more than twenty scenes that recount the Nativity and the daily life of the past.
The route starts from Via Coletta, at the intersection with Via Giovanni Pascoli, and winds through the village's iconic landmarks: the Medieval Castle and the Reed Museum, where you can admire an extraordinary nativity scene created in the seventies by master artisan Addolorata Olimpio. The path crosses charming spots and concludes in an ancient underground olive mill, carved into the rock, which houses the Nativity grotto: a finale of intense spirituality that captivates both adults and children.
Along the route, visitors encounter figures representing the ancient crafts of Salento: blacksmiths, shepherds, greengrocers, and artisans recreate the gestures and activities of peasant civilization, in a journey through time that restores the soul of a community deeply tied to its roots. There is no shortage of tastings of local products, including the essential pittule, which warm up the winter evenings.
As per tradition, on the evening of January 6th, dedicated to the Epiphany, the performance is enriched with the arrival of the Three Wise Men: one of the most anticipated moments, which officially closes the event.
The living nativity is organized by the San Carlo Borromeo Parish together with the Pro Loco Acquarica del Capo APS and the Confraternity of Maria Assunta in Cielo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Presicce-Acquarica. It is the result of the work of an entire town, which every year comes together to revive one of the most heartfelt traditions of the Salento Christmas calendar.
The 4th edition of the Acquarica Living Nativity confirmed the great appeal of the event, which returned to animate the ancient village for four evenings between Christmas and Epiphany. The route, with entrance from Via Coletta, led visitors through alleys, courtyards, and historic sites of the town, recreating scenes of daily life and the crafts of the past. There was no shortage of tastings of pittule and local products.
