Devotion, processions, and local flavors in the heart of the Gargano
Every year in mid-May, the community of San Marco in Lamis — a town in the Gargano region of Puglia's Foggia province — gathers to honor Saint Bernardino of Siena during his liturgical feast. The event is promoted by the San Bernardino – Maria SS. Addolorata Pastoral Community, led by Father Matteo Ferro, and brings together parishioners and citizens of all ages for days of reflection and community spirit.
The local devotion to Saint Bernardino is rooted in tradition: legend has it that the Saint, while on a pilgrimage to the Archangel's grotto in Monte Sant'Angelo, stopped in this part of the Gargano, near the site where the ancient church dedicated to him now stands. This bond is preserved today by the new Church of Saint Bernardino, which hosts the celebrations and serves as the focal point of the festivities.
Spiritual preparation includes the recitation of the novena and preparatory masses, also supported by the Archconfraternity of the Seven Sorrows. The religious heart of the feast is the solemn evening Eucharistic celebration, followed by a procession through the town streets carrying the statue of the Saint. Alongside the devotional aspect, there is a strong social element: a community gathering is held in the square in front of the church, featuring a tasting of pancotto, the typical local dish made with stale bread, vegetables, and olive oil, along with other local products.
The Feast of Saint Bernardino is an authentic opportunity to discover San Marco in Lamis away from mass tourism circuits: a village in the Gargano National Park where faith intertwines with the flavors and customs of rural tradition. Visitors during these days will find a welcoming community, heartfelt rituals, and the chance to sample the local 'cucina povera' in a festive, shared atmosphere.
The 2026 Liturgical Feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena in San Marco in Lamis spanned two days. The San Bernardino – Maria SS. Addolorata Pastoral Community, with Father Matteo Ferro, prepared the event with a well-attended novena and preparatory masses.
The highlight of the eve was the convivial meeting in the square in front of the new Church of Saint Bernardino, featuring a tasting of pancotto, a typical local dish, and other regional products. The solemn day of May 20 featured the evening Eucharistic celebration, enhanced by the presentation of a painting depicting Saint Bernardino and the new church, created by the young artist Beatrice Argentino, followed by a procession through the town streets.
In the preceding days: novena and preparatory masses, also animated by the Archconfraternity of the Seven Sorrows.
The celebrations take place at the Church of Saint Bernardino and the surrounding square in San Marco in Lamis (FG), with a procession through the town center.
The feast is held in mid-May. The solemn Eucharistic celebration takes place in the evening, followed by the procession; the convivial tasting event precedes the main day.
San Marco in Lamis can be reached via the SS89 and the provincial roads in the heart of the Gargano; the nearest motorway exit is Poggio Imperiale (A14). The reference railway station is San Severo.
