Three days of allegorical floats, traditional percussionists, and street performances in the Sannio region
In Limatola, a small municipality in the province of Benevento overlooking the Volturno Valley, the Carnival is not an imported event but a tradition built over time by the community. Reaching its 32nd edition in 2026, the Limatola Carnival has long since crossed provincial borders: the municipal administration reports packed squares and a massive influx of visitors from outside the province, proving that what was once a neighborhood festival is now one of the most recognizable Carnival events in inland Campania.
The event's signature formula is its distribution across three days throughout the territory: each appointment is hosted in a different area of the municipality, ensuring the celebration truly permeates the entire town rather than being confined to a single square. In 2026, the parades took place in the Biancano, Giardoni, and Ave Gratia Plena hamlets, with the town center involved in the decorations and entertainment. The grand finale always falls on Shrove Tuesday, with the ritual burning of the Carnival effigy, symbolically closing the festive cycle before Lent.
The stars of the show are the allegorical floats, the result of months of craftsmanship by the local 'Gruppo Carristi': papier-mรขchรฉ structures, large-scale figures, and satirical displays that slowly parade through the streets, surrounded by masked groups. Building the floats is a collective effort involving volunteers of all ages and represents the true continuity of the event, passed down from one edition to the next.
Alongside the floats marches 'A battuglia nov', the group of bottari from Limatola. The bottari are one of the most iconic musical expressions of the Campania tradition: percussionists who play barrels, vats, and scythes, producing an urgent, hypnotic rhythm of rural origin, linked to propitiatory rites of the agricultural cycle. For visitors from outside the region, this is likely the most surprising element of the Limatola Carnival, as it bears no resemblance to a traditional marching band but is entirely rooted in peasant festivities.
The street performances feature two traditional folk dances: the quadrille, a figure dance performed by couples in costume, and the laccio d'amore (ribbon dance), where dancers weave colorful ribbons around a central pole to the rhythm of the music. These elements restore the Carnival's ritual and symbolic dimension beyond its purely playful aspect, and they are revived every year as part of the town's intangible heritage.
The event is promoted by the Municipal Administration of Limatola, led by Mayor Domenico Parisi and Councilor Giuseppe Altieri, in collaboration with the 'A battuglia nov' group, the 'Gruppo Carristi', the 'Gruppo Carro gastronomico', and the Civil Protection. The Municipal Police and local law enforcement collaborate on security management.
The municipality, the lowest in altitude in the entire province of Benevento, is best known for its Norman castle that dominates the Volturno Valley, as well as the Church of San Biagio and the historic village. A visit during the Carnival allows you to combine the festivities with the discovery of a corner of Campania less traveled by mass tourism, just a short distance from Caserta and the Telesina Valley.
The 2026 edition, the thirty-second, confirmed the formula of three itinerant days in the different areas of the Municipality of Limatola, in the province of Benevento. A crescendo of participation, recognized by the municipal administration itself, led the event to conclude on Shrove Tuesday with the traditional burning of the Carnival effigy.
The protagonists were the allegorical floats created by the 'Gruppo Carristi', accompanied by the 'bottari' of 'A battuglia nov' with their rhythm of barrels and percussion, street performances with the quadrille and the 'laccio d'amore', live music, and the gastronomic float. The organization was handled by the Municipality of Limatola with Mayor Domenico Parisi and Councilor Giuseppe Altieri, together with local groups, the Fides Civil Protection, the Municipal Police, and law enforcement.
The program was curated by the Municipal Administration with the 'A battuglia nov' group, the 'Gruppo Carristi', the 'Gruppo Carro gastronomico', and the Civil Protection.
Limatola is located at the southwestern end of the province of Benevento, a few kilometers from the border with the province of Caserta. By car, it is easily accessible from Caserta or Caiazzo by following the signs for the Volturno Valley. The reference railway stations are Caserta and Maddaloni, from which you can continue via local bus lines or by car. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, about an hour away.
The parades and street performances take place on public streets and squares: admission is free. Only tastings at the gastronomic float and at the stands require payment.
