Civic storytelling theatre for April 25th in Serravalle Scrivia
In Serravalle Scrivia, a town in the province of Alessandria in the heart of eastern Piedmont, Liberation Day has long been a deeply felt community event. Alongside official ceremoniesโsuch as the parade, the laying of wreaths, and honors to the fallenโthe municipal administration offers an annual cultural moment that weaves together historical memory and live performance. In 2026, the highlight of the day is the theatre play "106 Garofani Rossi", scheduled for Saturday, April 25th, from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
The play is a production by the Quizzy Teatro company of Alessandria, written by Sergio Angelo Notti and performed by Monica Massone and Gianni Masella. It is a piece of civic storytelling theatre dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti, the socialist deputy murdered by fascists in 1924, and his wife Velia, a writer and poet. The title refers to the 106 parliamentary speeches Matteotti delivered before his assassination: an indictment against violence and abuse of power.
The play tells the story of Velia and Giacomo, offering the audience an intense reflection on the values of freedom, memory, and civic duty, blending emotion with historical rigor. The narrative shifts between Velia's intimate world and that of the perpetrators of the crime, using powerful language that avoids sentimentality and restores the human dimension to one of the most dramatic chapters in Italian history.
The performance takes place outdoors at the Villa Caffarena Performance Area, located at Piazza Carducci 4, within the "Ragazzi della Benedicta" municipal park. The choice of location is significant: the Benedicta, in the Apennines between Piedmont and Liguria, was the site of one of the most brutal Nazi-fascist massacres of 1944. Dedicating a public space to those young partisans serves to keep alive a memory that belongs to the entire Alessandria region. In case of bad weather, the show will be held in the school's Aula Magna.
The initiative, promoted by the Municipal Office for Social Services, Culture, and Tourism, confirms Serravalle Scrivia's commitment to celebrating April 25th not merely as an institutional ritual, but as an opportunity for participation and the transmission of memory to the new generations of Piedmont.
