The April 25th celebrations in the heart of the Bassa Reggiana
The Liberation Day Festival is one of the most heartfelt civil observances in Rubiera, a town in the Bassa Reggiana located along the Via Emilia, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Every year, around April 25th, the Municipality of Rubiera organizes an extensive program of celebrations to commemorate the anniversary of liberation from Nazism and Fascism, in collaboration with the local section of ANPI and Istoreco, the Institute for the History of the Resistance and Contemporary Society in the province of Reggio Emilia.
The province of Reggio Emilia is one of the symbolic territories of the Italian Resistance, and Rubiera preserves a living memory of those years. The April 25th initiatives are not limited to the official ceremony: they include moments of reflection, public readings, meetings, and exhibitions that recount the voices and stories of the partisans and citizens of Rubiera who participated in the Liberation struggle. It is an event designed to keep historical memory alive and pass it on to new generations.
The days typically include several events:
The Liberation Day Festival in Rubiera combines the solemnity of the official commemoration with popular participation. The band, processions, and outdoor readings transform the observance into an occasion for the entire community to gather, where institutions, associations, and citizens share the memory of the values of freedom and democracy born from the Resistance. Admission to all events is free.
For the 81st anniversary of Liberation, Rubiera offered two days of events. On April 24th, the municipal library hosted the exhibition "Rubiera, Voices and Stories of the Resistance", open until May 9th, and at 6:30 PM the event "We are Memory" curated by Matteo Corradini.
On April 25th, starting at 8:00 AM, visits were made to the memorial stones and graves of the fallen; at 10:15 AM, the gathering at the Town Hall, followed by Holy Mass, the solemn procession, and honors to the fallen with the Herberia Band. In the afternoon, at 3:30 PM in Parco don Andreoli, readings of writings by Rubiera witnesses of the Resistance curated by ANPI Rubiera, with Francesco Garuti and the Herberia Band.
Rubiera is located along the Via Emilia (SS9), between Reggio Emilia and Modena. By car, it is easily accessible from the Modena Nord or Reggio Emilia highway exits on the A1. Rubiera train station is served by the Milan-Bologna line. The celebrations take place in the historic center, at the Town Hall, the monuments to the fallen, and Parco don Andreoli.
