Open-air cinema in Piazza Malaspina, Tortona
Le Notti del Cinema is the summer open-air film festival that brings Piazza Malaspina to lifeโone of the most charming squares in the historic center of Tortona, a city in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont. For six consecutive nights, the square turns into a large outdoor cinema, with a giant screen bringing the magic of film to a welcoming, familiar urban setting.
The initiative began in 2024 as an "edition zero" and quickly established itself as one of the most beloved summer events in Tortona, becoming a permanent fixture of the municipal "Estate di Eventi" program, which fills the city with music, performances, and culture for two months.
The strength of the festival lies in its varied programming, designed to appeal to a wide audience. Each night features a different film in terms of genre, era, and tone, creating a journey that balances emotions and styles:
In previous editions, the festival has also highlighted content related to local culture, such as the docu-film dedicated to Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, the famous Divisionist painter from the Tortona area, showcasing the organizers' commitment to the region's identity.
Le Notti del Cinema is more than just screenings: the evening begins long before the film starts. From the early evening, the square comes alive with local bars, food offerings, and a festive atmosphere that invites people to enjoy the city center. Spectators are encouraged to participate actively with the "Bring Your Own Chair" policy: simply bring a lightweight chair or a cushion to enjoy the film in comfort.
Admission is always free and open, subject to availability. It is a simple, inclusive way to bring people back to the square and share the pleasure of outdoor cinema in one of the liveliest towns in the Alessandria area.
Part of the "Estate di Eventi" program promoted by the Tortona municipal administration, the festival complements other seasonal events, including concerts, musical performances, puppet theater, dance nights, and cultural meetings. Together, they make the Tortona summer a season rich in leisure and participation for all ages.
For 2026, Le Notti del Cinema confirms its summer appointment in Piazza Malaspina, Tortona, from June 30 to July 5. Six consecutive nights will transform the city center into a large open-air cinema, with free and open-access screenings.
The festival is part of the "Estate di Eventi 2026" program promoted by the municipal administration, supported by the Piedmont Region and local cultural partners. The "Bring Your Own Chair" policy remains in place, inviting spectators to contribute to the convivial atmosphere of the square.
The detailed film lineup will be published by the organizers closer to the event on official channels.
