An open-air film festival in the heart of Tortona

Le Notti del Cinema is the summer open-air film festival that brings Piazza Malaspina to life—one of the most charming squares in the historic center of Tortona, a city in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont. For six consecutive nights, the square turns into a large outdoor cinema, with a giant screen bringing the magic of film to a welcoming, familiar urban setting.

The initiative began in 2024 as an "edition zero" and quickly established itself as one of the most beloved summer events in Tortona, becoming a permanent fixture of the municipal "Estate di Eventi" program, which fills the city with music, performances, and culture for two months.

A program for every taste

The strength of the festival lies in its varied programming, designed to appeal to a wide audience. Each night features a different film in terms of genre, era, and tone, creating a journey that balances emotions and styles:

• Masterpieces of Italian and international auteur cinema
• Documentaries and docu-films, often with local ties
• Animated features and family-friendly films
• Timeless classics to be rediscovered on the big screen

In previous editions, the festival has also highlighted content related to local culture, such as the docu-film dedicated to Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, the famous Divisionist painter from the Tortona area, showcasing the organizers' commitment to the region's identity.

Atmosphere and conviviality in the square

Le Notti del Cinema is more than just screenings: the evening begins long before the film starts. From the early evening, the square comes alive with local bars, food offerings, and a festive atmosphere that invites people to enjoy the city center. Spectators are encouraged to participate actively with the "Bring Your Own Chair" policy: simply bring a lightweight chair or a cushion to enjoy the film in comfort.

Admission is always free and open, subject to availability. It is a simple, inclusive way to bring people back to the square and share the pleasure of outdoor cinema in one of the liveliest towns in the Alessandria area.
