Three days of historical fencing, duels, and medieval culture in the heart of Faenza
For a weekend in May, the historic center of Faenza, in the Province of Ravenna, transforms into a journey through time. Le Manfrediane – Encounters and Clashes weave together past and present through duels, art, and tradition, with the evocative Palazzo del Podestà and Piazza Martiri della Libertà as the backdrop. The name pays homage to the Manfredi family, the lordship that ruled the Romagna city between the 14th and 16th centuries and profoundly marked its history, with figures like Galeotto Manfredi.
The event takes its name from a dual nature. The Encounters represent the cultural aspect: conferences, book presentations, and graphic works dedicated to dueling, military life, and local history between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Clashes are the spectacular side: demonstrations and tournaments of historical fencing, with fencing masters and reenactors showcasing combat techniques with period weapons, from two-handed swords to the spadone, and HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) disciplines.
The heart of the edition is the "Disfida del Drago" team historical fencing tournament, where representatives of Faenza's ancient families and districts compete in the arena for honor. It's a demonstration tournament that brings the typical competitive spirit and theatricality of reenactments to the ring, transforming the square into a medieval arena.
Le Manfrediane is designed for all ages. The program includes educational workshops for adults and children: clay modeling, historical and modern fencing lessons, archery and crossbow shooting, wooden horse riding, coin minting, and strategy games. Ample space is dedicated to Faenza's ceramic tradition – the "faïence" that made Faenza's name famous worldwide – with conferences and demonstrations. In-depth sessions cover the history of the noble families, heraldry, the evolution of weapons and armor from the late 15th to the early 16th century, and local sites like the Castle of Rontana.
The event is part of the calendar for the Niballo – Palio di Faenza, the historic joust that pits the city's districts against each other and enlivens the city every spring. Le Manfrediane forms a cultural and martial chapter of this, organized by ASD Sala d'arme Achille Marozzo Romagna along with the cultural association Famaleonis. Admission to all activities is free, offering an opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and traditions of Emilia-Romagna.
The 2026 edition brought three intense days of historical fencing, culture, and reenactment to Faenza. The big new feature was the "Disfida del Drago", a team tournament between five representatives of the city's families, with an opening phase on Saturday and a spectacular evening final. The program alternated historical conferences, evening shows on the art of arms, educational concerts of medieval music, and workshops for all ages. Admission was free.
