About Lapio Carnival

In the heart of Irpinia, Lapio celebrates Carnival with a party designed primarily for the village's children and families. The event takes place at Palazzo Filangieri, the baronial residence that has become the village's cultural hub over the years: masks, entertainment, and live shows mark Shrove Tuesday. It is a simple, community-focused celebration promoted by the Municipality of Lapio, in the province of Avellino, as part of the wider Irpinian Carnival calendar.

The Lapio Carnival, a community celebration

The Lapio Carnival is one of the highlights of the winter calendar in this small village in the province of Avellino, Campania. This is not a carnival of allegorical floats or a spectacle built for tourism: it is a local village feast, promoted by the Municipality of Lapio and its City Council, designed specifically for the children and families living in the historic center and surrounding districts.

The concept is simple and deeply rooted in the Irpinian spirit: gathering together on Shrove Tuesday, wearing masks, enjoying entertainment and live performances, and closing the pre-Lenten period with joy. Visitors from outside will not find a large-scale kermis, but they will be able to observe firsthand how a small Irpinian town still experiences the festival as a collective moment.

Palazzo Filangieri, the heart of the celebration

The festivities take place at Palazzo Filangieri, the baronial palace that dominates the historic center of Lapio on Via Roma. A testament to the Filangieri family's peak period between the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex preserves over six hundred square meters of artistic decorations, with frescoes and tempera paintings spanning from the Renaissance to the 18th century: from the atrium to the service areas, passing through the Hall of the Muses, featuring the nine mythological muses, and the Tower Hall with its refined trompe-l'oeil architecture.

In recent years, the palace has become the premier public space for Lapio's cultural life: it hosts exhibitions, book presentations, film clubs, Christmas initiatives, and, of course, the Carnival party. For the local children, it means celebrating inside a monument—a privilege that is almost taken for granted in Lapio.

A party designed for children

The program is intentionally essential and revolves around a few recurring elements:

  • Live entertainment and shows for children;
  • Masks and costumes, with no registration required;
  • Surprises and games organized by the municipal administration;
  • The setting within the historic halls of Palazzo Filangieri, sheltered from the February cold.

It is a formula that prioritizes participation over spectacle: no tickets, no grandstands, just an afternoon spent together.

Carnival in Irpinia, a mosaic of traditions

The Lapio celebration is part of a territory rich in history. The Irpinian Carnival is considered one of the most distinctive in Southern Italy: just a few kilometers from Lapio, Montemarano celebrates its tarantella carnival, while in numerous municipalities of the province—from Mercogliano to Baiano, from Montoro to Cesinali—the performance of Zeza, the popular masked song-theater passed down through generations, still thrives. Alongside parades and allegorical floats, this mosaic of folk rituals is rooted in ancient celebrations and continues to serve as the community's collective memory.

Lapio does not compete with these historic events: it chooses an intimate and familiar dimension, while participating in the same calendar and culture of Shrove Tuesday.

Lapio, the home of Fiano di Avellino

Those who visit Lapio discover one of the benchmarks of Campanian viticulture: the village is considered one of the cradles of Fiano di Avellino DOCG, to which the town dedicates the Fiano Love Fest in the summer. The hills sloping toward the Calore valley, the vineyards, the historic center clustered around the baronial palace, and the wineries open year-round make Lapio an interesting stop even out of season, when wine tourism slows down and the village returns to its daily rhythm.

Coming to Lapio for Carnival therefore means discovering an Irpinia village far from mass tourism circuits, during a time of year when the countryside is quiet and life is concentrated in the palace halls and the narrow streets of the center.

When it takes place

The event falls during the final days of Carnival, traditionally on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday. Dates and details of the initiative are communicated by the Municipality of Lapio through the news section of their official website and the administration's channels, usually a few days before the festival.

Lapio Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Lapio Carnival was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Shrove Tuesday, in the halls of Palazzo Filangieri. The initiative, promoted by the City Council, was dedicated to the village's children: the program featured a juggling show with Jenny and, as announced by the administration, "many other surprises" for the Carnival party. The official notice was published by the Municipality of Lapio on February 13, 2026.

The 2026 Carnival at Palazzo Filangieri

The Municipality of Lapio, in the province of Avellino, invited the community to Palazzo Filangieri on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to celebrate Carnival together. The announcement, released on February 13 on the official website in the Culture and Youth sections, was as essential as the party itself: a juggling show and a series of surprises designed for the little ones.

Juggling and surprises for children

The heart of the afternoon was the juggling show with Jenny, accompanied—according to the formula announced by the City Council—by "many other surprises" for the masked children. As usual, the party took place in the halls of the baronial palace, which in recent years has hosted most of the village's cultural and social initiatives, from Christmas festivals to film clubs.

Part of the Irpinian Carnival calendar

The date of February 17, 2026, coincided with Shrove Tuesday, the highlight of Carnival throughout Irpinia: on the same day, several municipalities in the province of Avellino staged parades, allegorical floats, and performances of the Zeza. Lapio chose its own dimension, that of an intimate and familiar party, confirming Palazzo Filangieri as the reference point for the village's community life.
