About Lama Carnival

The Lama dei Peligni Carnival is the most playful winter festival in this small mountain village at the foot of the Majella, in the province of Chieti. It is deeply rooted in the local agro-pastoral culture, when allegorical masquerades and ox-drawn floats would depict the seasons, the months, and the trades of yesteryear. Even today, amidst costumes, music, and the flavors of local cuisine, the community gathers in the historic center to relive a tradition that blends irony, memory, and Peligna identity.

The Lama dei Peligni Carnival

In the heart of the Majella National Park, at an altitude of 669 meters, the town of Lama dei Peligni celebrates one of the most distinctive carnivals in inland Abruzzo every year. In a village of just over a thousand inhabitants, known as the "home of the Apennine chamois," the Carnival is not just a costume party, but an ancient ritual rooted in the farming and pastoral culture of the local community in the province of Chieti.

Agro-pastoral roots

In rural societies, the Carnival represented a period of symbolic renewal, a suspended time where values were overturned and ritual transgression served to ward off evil and ensure abundant harvests. Masks, made from recycled fabrics, sheets, and old clothes, served to erase differences in status, gender, and age, creating a temporary equality where rich and poor were indistinguishable.

Allegorical masquerades

The local tradition is famous for its allegorical masquerades, true living tableaux that brought memorable themes to the town square during the 20th century:

  • The Four Seasons (1934), with floats depicting the cycle of farm work;
  • The Twelve Months, dedicated to the monthly produce of the land;
  • Bacchus in Abruzzo, featuring an ox-drawn float decorated with vine leaves, from which the god of wine would emerge;
  • The Merry Tradesmen, with shoemakers, tailors, and painters boasting about their professions.

The parades would start in the afternoon, accompanied by an improvised band of trumpets, accordions, guitars, mandolins, and drums, while a man on each float would sing descriptive and humorous songs. In this way, the community represented itself and reaffirmed its cultural identity.

The flavors of the local Carnival

Carnival in Lama dei Peligni is also a feast for the palate. There is no shortage of pork products, sausages, and salamis, symbols of abundance, and cicerchiata, a sweet made of small fried dough spheres covered in honey. Popular memory recalls the famous lunch of the nine things, featuring egg pasta, frittata with sausage, kid goat meat, roast veal, fruit, and wine, following the saying "at Carnival one must eat nine times." Alongside these is the sfogliatella lamese, the village's signature pastry filled with grape and black cherry jam, walnuts, cooked grape must, and cocoa.

A village to discover

Experiencing the Lama dei Peligni Carnival is also an opportunity to explore one of the most charming villages in the Abruzzo Apennines: the Grotta del Cavallone, the highest tourist cave in Europe, the Apennine Chamois Wildlife Area, the Natural History Museum, and the Botanical Garden. A day of celebration immersed in the nature and folk traditions of Abruzzo.
