Italy's most scenic half marathon, running from Stresa to Verbania along the Borromean Gulf
The Lago Maggiore Half Marathon is an early spring running event that draws thousands of runners every year to the shores of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB), Piedmont. The route follows the coastal road connecting Stresa to Verbania Pallanza, passing through the town of Baveno and its charming lakeside, with constant views of the Borromean Gulf, the Borromean Islands, and the mountains framing the lake.
Considered one of the fastest and most scenic races in Italy, the course is almost entirely flat and runs right along the water. The 21 km half marathon starts from the Stresa lakeside, while the 10 km begins in Fondotoce; both distances finish in Verbania. The stretch through Baveno, which involves the temporary closure of the SS33 road between Baveno and Feriolo, is one of the most spectacular moments of the entire course.
The event is not just for elite athletes: alongside the competitive races (which hold a FIDAL Bronze Label), there are non-competitive versions for both the 21 km and 10 km distances, designed for those who want to enjoy the experience by running or walking without the pressure of the clock. This dual approach makes the race a celebration of sport and local territory, blending athletic performance with the discovery of the Piedmontese landscape.
Beyond the race, the weekend revolves around the event village, featuring an expo, bib collection, and entertainment. The Lago Maggiore Half Marathon has become a major tourist showcase for Stresa, Baveno, and Verbania, welcoming runners and their companions from all over Italy and abroad, confirming the strong link between major sporting events and the promotion of the Piedmontese lakes.
The 18th edition of the Lago Maggiore Half Marathon brought the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore to life on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The race confirmed the formula appreciated over the years: the 21 km half marathon starting from Stresa and the 10 km from Fondotoce, both finishing in Verbania and passing along the Baveno lakeside. The Borromean Gulf and its islands provided the backdrop for one of the most scenic races on the national running calendar.
All distances are offered in competitive (FIDAL valid, Bronze Label) and non-competitive versions.
Baveno is located along the SS33 Sempione road on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. By car: A26 motorway (Baveno-Stresa exit). By train: Baveno station on the Domodossola-Milan line. Stresa and Verbania are also reachable via the same railway line.
During the race, the SS33 road is closed to traffic between Stresa and the Feriolo roundabout, approximately from 9:45 AM to 11:15 AM. We recommend checking the traffic plan published by the organizers.
Registration is available online on the official website lmhm.it and through dedicated portals (endu.net). For information: [email protected]. Baveno Tourist Office: +39 0323 924632.
