About Laertino Carnival

Every February, Laterza—the city of majolica overlooking the deepest ravine in Puglia—dresses in vibrant colors for the Laertino Carnival. In the heart of the historic center, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the main street host a children's festival, the traditional 'pentolaccia' game, mascots, and a parade of allegorical floats. Organized by the Pro Madonna delle Grazie Association with the support of the Municipality of Laterza, this popular, free event brings together families, schools, and volunteers for a day of joy, confetti, and local tradition.

The Laertino Carnival

The Laertino Carnival is the signature carnival celebration of Laterza, a town in the province of Taranto, located in the heart of the Puglia hinterland. Every year, between late January and the Lenten season, the town comes alive with costumes, confetti, music, and colors, featuring the enthusiastic participation of children, families, schools, and local associations. The event is organized by the Pro Madonna delle Grazie Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Laterza.

The children's party in the square

The most anticipated moment is the Children's Carnival, held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, in the heart of the town. The square transforms into a vast space of play and joy: mascots of beloved children's characters, dancing, balloons, confetti, and the traditional pentolaccia game, which releases a shower of candies and surprises to the delight of the children in costume. It is a day designed for families, centered on color, sharing, and fun.

The allegorical float parade

Alongside the children's festivities, the Laertino Carnival features a parade of allegorical floats along the streets and the main avenue of the center, complete with costumed groups, music, and entertainment. The floats, crafted by local volunteers and associations, showcase the creativity and community spirit of Laterza, drawing crowds from across the town and neighboring municipalities.

Laterza, the city of majolica

The Carnival takes place in a setting of great charm. Laterza is famous for its ancient majolica tradition—recognized as a City of Ceramics alongside Grottaglie and Cutrofiano—and for the spectacular Gravina di Laterza, one of the longest and deepest canyons in Europe. The historic center, with its narrow alleys, rock-hewn churches, and the MUMA (Majolica Museum), provides a suggestive backdrop for the carnival parades.

A popular and free festival

The Laertino Carnival is a free event deeply rooted in the community, born from the commitment of volunteers and the contribution of local families. More than just a festive appointment, it represents a moment of gathering and participation that renews the popular traditions of Laterza and Puglia every year, bringing smiles to both young and old.
