The most irreverent historical carnival in Emilia, without masks and all in dialect
In Fiorenzuola d'Arda, along the historic Via Emilia in the province of Piacenza, Carnival is not called Carnival: it's called Zobia. The name derives from the Latin iovia, meaning "Thursday," referring to Fat Thursday which kicks off the celebrations. It is one of the oldest and most original traditions in Emilia-Romagna, recognized among the region's historical carnivals, and this year marks its 43rd modern edition.
The origins of La Zobia date back to the late Middle Ages and are rooted in the popular rites of peasant civilization. According to some studies by local historians, the festival may have roots linked to the Jewish community settled in Fiorenzuola in the 15th century and the joyful celebrations of Purim, with its masks and disguises. Since then, La Zobia has been renewed year after year without ever losing its connection to its roots.
What makes La Zobia truly unique is its fundamental rule: no masks or sumptuous costumes. The participants parade with their faces uncovered, wearing disguises made of rags and a lot of creativity. At the heart of the festival is satire: dialogues, jokes, and short performances strictly in the Fiorenzuola dialect target current local events and figures, in an atmosphere of irreverence that has earned La Zobia the reputation of Emilia's most irreverent carnival.
The heart of the event is the artisanal floats, built by city groups — bars, associations, groups of friends — which parade through the historic center competing for the coveted Palio. Alongside the floats, 'paliotti' (smaller floats), couples, and individuals parade, all competing for prizes awarded by a jury. The parade thus becomes an occasion for collective participation involving the entire community of Fiorenzuola.
Along the streets of the center, there are no shortage of food stalls with specialties from the Piacenza area: mulled wine, 'anolini' to go, 'ciccioli', 'salamelle', 'chisolini', and many other delicacies of local cuisine, to be enjoyed while strolling between the floats.
La Zobia is also an event dedicated to children thanks to 'Zobia dei bambini' (Children's Zobia), with music, confetti, masks, and joy, and it concludes with a grand dancing evening that draws the city into the final commotion. A free and deeply identity-driven event, which every year on the eve of Lent fills the heart of Fiorenzuola d'Arda with colors, satire, and dialect.
The 43rd edition of La Zobia, the historical carnival of Fiorenzuola d'Arda, was held on February 14 and 15, 2026. Eight allegorical floats competed for the Palio, hosted by Mario Tosini and Omaira Ferraroni, who took over from the historic presenter Walter Portesi. Amidst parades, 'paliotti', couples and individuals in rag costumes, satire in the Fiorenzuola dialect, and the unmissable food stalls with mulled wine and 'anolini' to go, the event animated the historic center of the Piacenza town for two days.
Along the streets of the center, throughout the event, food stalls with mulled wine, 'anolini' to go, 'ciccioli' to go, 'salamelle', 'chisolini', and many other local specialties.
The Carnival takes place in the historic center of Fiorenzuola d'Arda (PC), with its epicenter in Piazza Caduti and along the city streets. The float parades cross the heart of the city.
By car: Fiorenzuola d'Arda is located along the Via Emilia (SS9) and is accessible from the A1 motorway (Fiorenzuola exit). By train: Fiorenzuola d'Arda station is on the Bologna–Piacenza–Milan line, a few minutes' walk from the center.
