Two days of sweet tastings in San Filippo del Mela, featuring almond and black rice delicacies
La Valle del Dolce is a festival dedicated to artisanal pastry-making that brings life to San Filippo del Mela, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Gulf, in the heart of the so-called Mela Valley. For two evenings, the central Piazza Francesco Paolo Fulci becomes a tasting trail where local master pastry chefs share the identity of the territory and recipes passed down through generations through their desserts.
The event is centered around two iconic ingredients of the Messina confectionery tradition: almonds and black rice. Using these ingredients, local pastry shops create everything from gelato to traditional pastries, as well as innovative new desserts that reinterpret classic flavors with a contemporary twist.
The tastings are accompanied by folk music, with melodies and atmospheres typical of the Sicilian tradition that make the evening stroll even more convivial. The initiative was created to rediscover, as Mayor Gianni Pino emphasized, recipes passed down through time that express the cultural identity of the community.
La Valle del Dolce is promoted by the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela and co-funded by the Sicilian Region through the Regional Department of Productive Activities as part of the "Sicilia che piace" initiative. This project aims to link the name of the Mela Valley to its food, wine, and artisanal excellence, promoting the small Messina town as a destination for food lovers in Sicily.
The inaugural 2026 edition of La Valle del Dolce took place on June 20 and 21, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM in Piazza Francesco Paolo Fulci. The event, promoted by the Municipality of San Filippo del Mela and co-funded by the Sicilian Region as part of the "Sicilia che piace" initiative, highlighted local confectionery excellence, particularly almonds and black rice.
Three pastry shops were featured: Bar Manna with nougat gelato and almond brittle with citrus variations, Pasticceria Golosi Sapori with a mousse on a crunchy black rice base with honey and citrus cream, and Bar Casanova with almond paste cookies and a surprise dessert. The evenings were enriched by Sicilian folk music.
