A neighborhood festival that has become a summer staple

La Piaja in Festa is one of the most beloved summer events in Gaeta, in the province of Latina, Lazio. The event takes place in the Piaja district, the seafaring neighborhood stretching along the harbor and the Giovanni Caboto waterfront. It was born from a simple idea: to give back to residents and visitors a piece of the city that served as the heart of fishermen's work for centuries. For over ten editions, the Golfo Eventi Cultural Association, led by Giovanni Russo, has crafted a unique evening that blends history, culture, gastronomy, and entertainment, with the patronage of the Municipality of Gaeta and the support of the Lazio Region.

The common thread: history meets entertainment

The festival's formula has remained faithful to its original spirit. Each year, organizers choose to highlight a historic site in the district, opening it to the public and sharing its story through free guided tours. The most famous site is the Roman maritime necropolis of Calègna, an imperial-era burial ground overlooking the sea that remains accessible until late at night during the festival—a rare opportunity, as visits are not always possible throughout the year. Alongside these extraordinary openings, the event features photo exhibitions, meetings, and moments of remembrance dedicated to the life of the district.

Music, dance, and shows on the harbor

As the sun sets, the harbor transforms into a large open-air stage. The program typically includes concerts by local bands, folk music orchestras, ballroom dancing, performances by local dance schools, and a grand finale featuring a DJ set spanning the decades, from the seventies and nineties to the latest hits. The event also features fire performances, scenic effects, and, in the most elaborate editions, fireworks over the sea at midnight, reflecting on the harbor waters and closing the evening in front of thousands of spectators.

The culinary village

A central part of the festival is the culinary village set up in the harbor area, with stands offering the flavors of the Gulf of Gaeta and Lazio cuisine: bluefish, fried seafood, the famous tiella di Gaeta in its various versions (escarole, octopus, anchovies and escarole), PDO Gaeta olives, desserts, and local beers. The district's restaurants and shops stay open until late, turning the evening into a showcase for the local economy.

White Night and Piaja in Festa

Over the years, the event has often been paired with the neighborhood's White Night, organized by the same association: two consecutive evenings in late July that together constitute the most intense moment of the Piaja summer, featuring national and international guests, musical parades, children's entertainment, and activities all along the Caboto waterfront.

Along with Sperlonga and Formia, Gaeta is one of the most visited tourist hubs on the southern coast of Lazio, and the Piaja festival showcases its most authentic, seafaring side.
