The St. Joseph's bonfire that lights up Piazza Kennedy in Paternopoli
In Paternopoli, a small village in the Irpinia region of the province of Avellino, the feast of St. Joseph is celebrated not only in church, but above all in the town square, around a great bonfire. This is the Lumaneria, a fire ritual that every March transforms Piazza Kennedy into the glowing heart of the village. As the flames rise, the community gathers around the brazier, and the evening continues with traditional dishes, songs, and folk dances.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Paternopoli together with the Pro Loco and the La Macenata association, the same group that hosts the famous grape-crushing festival in the autumn. The result is an authentic celebration, crafted by local volunteers, free from spectacular artifice: just fire, food, music, and people.
St. Joseph's bonfires are one of the most deep-rooted traditions in Irpinia and throughout the South. Their origins lie in the agro-pastoral world: at the end of winter, pruning branches were burned to clear stables and fields in a collective gesture of cleansing and rebirth. With Christianity, the custom was dedicated to St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and patron saint of carpenters and craftsmen, while retaining its powerful, unifying, and purifying force.
The local name, Lumaneria, evokes light: the term is used in several Irpinian towns to refer to the celebration of the St. Joseph bonfire. In the past, preparations began right after the Christmas holidays, with the gathering of fasci (bundles) of wood in the countryside, and each neighborhood would set up its own pyre in a friendly competition to see who could build the tallest one.
Access to the square is free, and the festival is designed for all ages: families, children, the elderly, and visitors from neighboring towns all come together in one of the few moments when the village comes back to life.
The food stalls are an integral part of the Lumaneria. The cuisine offered is that of Irpinian homes: simple, seasonal dishes linked to the rural culture of the Campanian hinterland. Paternopoli is located in the heart of the Upper Irpinia wine region, a land of great reds made from Aglianico grapes, and the tradition of wine naturally accompanies every local festival.
With just over two thousand inhabitants and nestled at an altitude of about 480 meters, Paternopoli is an agricultural village in the interior of Campania, surrounded by the towns of Castelfranci, Fontanarosa, Gesualdo, Luogosano, and Montemarano. The local calendar is punctuated by events that tell the story of the territory's identity: the Lumaneria in March, the Aprilatico Broccoli Festival in spring, the Night of the Laurel at Easter, and, in September, La Macenata with its traditional grape-crushing ritual in the vat.
Visitors from outside will find in an evening like this the most direct way to understand Irpinia: no tourist staging, just a community that continues to repeat, from generation to generation, an ancient gesture around the fire.
The 2026 edition of the Lumaneria was held on Saturday, March 21 in Piazza Kennedy, in the center of Paternopoli, in the province of Avellino. As per tradition, the program followed the rhythm of the evening: first the table, then the fire, and finally the music.
The lighting of the bonfire remained the central moment of the evening, the gesture that gathers the entire town around the flames and renews one of the oldest customs of Irpinia. The food stalls, managed by local volunteers, offered dishes from the local rustic cuisine, while the musical entertainment was entrusted to the group Suoni del Sud, with a repertoire of folk music from Southern Italy.
The organization was shared, once again this year, by the Municipality of Paternopoli, the Pro Loco, and the La Macenata association, with free access to the square.
The evening continued in the square with folk music, tastings, and conviviality.
Piazza Kennedy, in the center of Paternopoli (83052), province of Avellino, Campania.
By car: Take the Castelfranci or Taurasi exit on the SS7 Appia state road / Avellino-Lioni junction, then follow provincial roads to Paternopoli. From Avellino, travel through the Calore Valley towards Taurasi-Castelfranci.
By train: The nearest useful stations are on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line; however, it is recommended to continue by car.
Access to the square and the bonfire show is free. Food and drinks at the stalls are available for purchase.
The evening takes place outdoors, and in March, at an altitude of 480 meters, the temperature drops significantly after sunset: it is advisable to dress warmly. Park in the areas on the outskirts of the center and reach the square on foot.
