About La Luce di Stabia

La Luce di Stabia is the major Christmas festival in Castellammare di Stabia, in the province of Naples. From December 6th to January 19th, the town brings its historic centre and squares to life with around forty events: tree and light switch-ons, Coldiretti and Slow Food markets, Neapolitan nativity scenes, a Santa Claus village, sacred and folk concerts, street performers, and the traditional feast of the patron saint, San Catello. A month and a half of widespread festivities, almost all free of charge, accompanying the city from the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany and beyond.

La Luce di Stabia: the widespread Christmas of Castellammare

La Luce di Stabia is the Christmas event programme promoted by the Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia, a city in the Vesuvius area in the province of Naples, Campania. Created as a project to illuminate and animate the festive season, the event gathers around forty appointments under a single name, distributed throughout the historic centre, churches, theatres, the Villa Comunale, and the city's green spaces, with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples and the Chamber of Commerce.

A month and a half of events

The programme runs from December 6th until January 19th, the feast day of the patron saint San Catello, covering the entire festive period from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany and beyond. The symbolic moment is The Night of Light, featuring the lighting of Christmas trees in various districts and kilometres of illuminations that decorate the city. Around this luminous thread, a rich calendar of initiatives is developed for residents and visitors of all ages.

What to expect

  • Markets by Coldiretti and Slow Food in the Villa Comunale, plus stalls featuring crafts, vintage items, and typical local products from the Stabia area;
  • Nativity traditions: the Grand Neapolitan Nativity Scene in the Co-Cathedral, the living nativity scene in the historic centre, and the nativity art exhibition in the church of Gesรน e Maria;
  • Music: sacred and folk performances in theatres and parishes, including concerts, choirs, and tributes;
  • Entertainment for children and families, including a Santa Claus village and a Befana village in the Villa Gabola urban park;
  • Street art, majorettes, shows, and the White Night in the historic centre.

The city and its traditions

Castellammare di Stabia, overlooking the Gulf of Naples between Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrento Peninsula, experiences Christmas as a moment of strong community identity. The programme highlights the heritage of the historic centre and culminates in the feast of San Catello, the city's patron saint, on January 19th: a deep bond between devotion, popular traditions, and city life that makes La Luce di Stabia much more than a simple Christmas festival.
