La Corrida sotto le Stelle: a stage for everyone

Every summer, in Prignano Cilento, a small town of just over a thousand residents in the province of Salerno, Campania, the town square transforms into an open-air theater. La Corrida sotto le Stelle follows the classic television format that made the expression «dilettanti allo sbaraglio» (amateurs thrown into the fray) famous: anyone can take the stage and test their skills in front of their neighbors, who deliver the verdict with applause, laughter, and all sorts of noisy instruments.

You don't need to be a professional, and that is exactly the point. Amateur singers, impressionists, comedians, dancers, children, and grandparents take turns at the microphone in an evening that is, above all, a community celebration. For years, it has been one of the most anticipated events in the summer calendar curated by the Pro Loco of Prignano Cilento.

A village in the heart of the Cilento

Prignano Cilento stands at an altitude of about 415 meters, a short distance from the Alento River valley and within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The historic center preserves the church of San Nicola di Bari, the town's patron saint, and the Palazzo marchesale Cardone, recognizable by its sturdy crenellated cylindrical tower. The hamlets of Melito and San Giuliano complete a municipal territory located just a few kilometers from the sea of Agropoli and the archaeological site of Paestum.

In this context, the Corrida is more than just a show: it is the moment when the town, which repopulates in summer thanks to the return of those living away and the arrival of vacationers, comes together in one place.

How the evening works

• Stage in the square: In recent editions, the event has taken place in Piazza Municipio, the civic heart of the village.
• Open to all: Anyone wishing to perform can propose their act to the Pro Loco, with no professional auditions required.
• Popular jury: The audience decides the outcome, not a technical committee.
• Hosting and music: The evening is led by a presenter and interspersed with live musical moments.
• Evening schedule: It starts after dinner, outdoors, under the August sky — hence the name of the event.

Inside the Prignano summer

The Corrida almost always arrives at the end of the Pro Loco's summer program, which in recent seasons has featured Forni in Festa in the Rione San Giuseppe, a gastronomic journey dedicated to Cilento pizza, freselle, and stuffed eggplant; Fritti in Festa with fried pizza and live music; open-air theater performances; children's entertainment; the Festa della Madonna del Buon Consiglio in mid-August, with a procession, fireworks, and a concert; and at the end of September, the Festa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano. In 2024, the Corrida was even preceded, on the same day, by a Color Run that started in the afternoon.

Why it is worth attending

Those who spend their summer in Cilento know the large food festivals and concerts on the coast well. La Corrida sotto le Stelle offers something different: an authentic slice of village life, where the fun comes from the talent — or the courage — of the locals rather than a paid performance. It is an event free in spirit, watched standing or sitting on chairs in the square, with the local bar just a few steps away and the certainty of knowing someone before the night is over.

For fans of popular traditions, Prignano Cilento also holds another unique feature: L'Opera dei Turchi, a theatrical performance held on Easter Monday that stages the miracles attributed to the patron saint. It is a sign that here, street theater in all its forms is a deeply rooted tradition.
