The Epiphany celebration in the square of Trasacco, in the heart of the Marsica region
Every year on January 6th, the center of Trasacco comes alive to celebrate the Epiphany with "La Befana vien di notte," the festival that brings the holiday season to a beautiful close in this town in the Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila. The event takes place in Piazza SS. Cesidio e Rufino, the town's main square overlooking the historic Romanesque basilica dedicated to the patron saints, which for the occasion transforms into a small enchanted village designed for both adults and children.
The event, organized by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco of Trasacco, kicks off in the early afternoon with a rich program dedicated to families: entertainment, children's games, music, and fun fill the square with joy. The most anticipated moment is the arrival of the Befana, who makes her official entrance bringing smiles and sweets to all the children present. The day concludes with the lottery drawing and the announcement of the winning tickets.
To ward off the winter chill and make the atmosphere even more welcoming, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and numerous traditional pastries prepared for the occasion are distributed throughout the square. It is an opportunity to gather together, enjoy local traditional products, and experience the excitement of the arrival of Italy's most beloved old lady.
Located on the southern shore of the ancient Fucino basin, Trasacco is one of the most characteristic villages in the Abruzzo Marsica. The town is home to the Basilica of Saints Cesidio and Rufino, a jewel of Romanesque-Renaissance architecture featuring the famous "Portal of Men," and the Febonio Tower. The Befana festival thus takes place in a setting rich in history and devotion, offering residents and visitors an authentic way to bid farewell to the Christmas holidays in Abruzzo.
