The Easter ritual of the encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna in Pietraperzia
In the town of Pietraperzia, in the province of Enna, in the heart of inland Sicily, Easter Sunday culminates in one of the most moving rituals of the local religious calendar: L'Ancuntru. At noon, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna are carried toward each other until the moment of recognition.
The scene has the power of an open-air sacred play. The Madonna, still wrapped in her black mourning cloak for the death of her Son, moves toward the Risen Christ: she advances and retreats three times, in a display of hesitation that leaves the crowded square breathless. Only when she finally recognizes him does the Virgin shed her black cloak and run to meet the risen Jesus. At that instant, the sky of Pietraperzia fills with white doves, firecrackers echo, and the bells of the Santa Maria di Gesù church ring out in a collective explosion of joy.
L'Ancuntru is the final moment of one of the richest Holy Weeks in Sicily. On Good Friday, Pietraperzia hosts the famous procession of the Signore delle Fasce (Lu Signuri di li fasci), featuring a large wooden structure carrying the Crucifix, hoisted and wrapped in about two hundred white linen strips, while the faithful wear the Misureddi, red ribbons. On Holy Saturday evening, the statue of the Madonna is transferred from the church of Santa Maria di Gesù to the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in anticipation of the following day's Easter encounter.
After the noon encounter, Easter day continues with the solemn afternoon Mass at the Mother Church and a procession through the town streets. In the evening, in front of the Santa Maria di Gesù church, the community gathers for a video mapping projection dedicated to the death and resurrection of Christ, followed by a blessing. The Octave of Easter, the following Sunday, features another procession with the statues of the Madonna dell'Ancuntru and Saint Vincent. The festival is organized by the Confraternity of the Most Precious Blood of Christ and the Santa Maria di Gesù parish.
Holy Week 2026 in Pietraperzia reached its peak on Easter Sunday, April 5, with the traditional Ancuntru. The square hosted the ritual encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna, accompanied by the flight of white doves, the sound of firecrackers, and the bells of Santa Maria di Gesù. In the evening, the community gathered for a video mapping projection on the resurrection and the final blessing.
