The international snow and ice sculpture festival at 2,500 meters in the Skiarena Klausberg
The Klausberg Ice Games, also known as the International Snow Sculpture Festival, are one of the most evocative winter highlights in South Tyrol. Every year in early January, the Skiarena Klausberg above Cadipietra (Steinhaus), a village in the municipality of Ahrntal (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol), turns into a vast open-air studio at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters, near the K2 chairlift mountain station.
Teams of sculptors from all over the world work for four days on massive blocks of compacted snow measuring 3x3x3 meters. Artists use only manual tools—hammers, files, saws, pickaxes, shovels, and buckets—with no limits on their imagination. Their collective effort results in monumental figures, animals, sports scenes, and abstract compositions that remain visible on the slopes until spring, when the late-winter sun slowly melts them away.
Each edition of the Klausberg Ice Games revolves around a common theme that inspires the artists. The festival is both a competition and a celebration: at the end of the work, an expert jury evaluates the pieces and awards prizes, while the public can participate by casting their own votes. The most acclaimed teams receive cash prizes and the coveted symbolic title associated with the event.
The setting is the spectacular Zillertal Alps and the peaks surrounding the Ahrntal, Italy's northernmost valley. Spectators can reach the competition site via the ski lifts and watch the sculptors at work, walking among the creations on a path that combines winter sports, contemporary art, and alpine landscapes.
The Klausberg Ice Games are designed for families, ski enthusiasts, and art lovers. Access to the sculpture area is free (a ski lift ticket is required to reach the altitude), and the atmosphere is that of a traditional South Tyrolean mountain festival. The event is organized by the Ahrntal Tourist Office (Tourismusverein Ahrntal) in collaboration with Skiworld Ahrntal.
The sixteenth edition of the Klausberg Ice Games was held from January 12 to 15, 2026, with the theme 'Olympic Winter Games'. Sculptors gathered at the K2 chairlift mountain station, at 2,500 meters, to carve their works inspired by the Winter Olympics and international sports competitions.
The title of 'Eiskönig' (Ice King) was won by the Carving Team Austria, consisting of Alexander Kaufmann and Herbert Danzer, with the sculpture 'High speed on ice'. Also on the podium were the Italian-German team with '5 olympische Disziplinen' and the German pair with 'Ring-Boarder'. The works remained visible on the slopes of the Skiarena Klausberg for most of the winter.
From January 12 to 14, teams worked from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, while on January 15, the competition concluded in the morning (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM) with the jury's evaluation and the awards ceremony. Theme: 'Olympic Winter Games'. 3x3x3 m snow blocks, manual tools. Meeting point: K2 chairlift mountain station, Skiarena Klausberg (2,500 m).
The Skiarena Klausberg is located above Cadipietra/Steinhaus, a village in Ahrntal (BZ). By car, you can reach Cadipietra from the Puster Valley (A22 motorway exit Bressanone, then SS49 to Brunico and continue to Ahrntal). From there, take the K1 cable car and the K2 chairlift to the mountain station, the event's meeting point at 2,500 meters.
Admission to the sculpture area is free; a ski lift ticket is required. The event typically takes place in the second week of January, with opening hours from morning until early afternoon.
