About Katàbba

Katàbba - A Thousand Years of History is one of Sicily's oldest medieval historical re-enactments. Every January, in the Peloritani mountain village of Monforte San Giorgio, near Messina, the town commemorates the arrival of Grand Count Roger I of Hauteville, who liberated the village from Saracen rule in 1061. Amidst the beating of drums and the ringing of the Sant'Agata bells, costumed processions, flag-wavers, jugglers, fire-eaters, and noble knights and ladies bring the historic center to life, culminating in the grand historical pageant on the festival Sunday.

Katàbba, the millennial re-enactment of Monforte San Giorgio

Katàbba - A Thousand Years of History is the medieval historical re-enactment that, every year in the heart of winter, transports the village of Monforte San Giorgio—tucked away in the Peloritani mountains of the Province of Messina, Sicily—back in time. Considered one of the oldest events of its kind on the island, the Katàbba celebrates a foundational moment in local history: the arrival of Grand Count Roger I of Hauteville. In 1061, after conquering Rometta, Venetico, and Roccavaldina, he laid siege to the castle of Munt da Furt, liberating the village from Saracen rule before continuing toward the plains of Milazzo.

The meaning of "Katàbba"

The name of the festival itself refers to the sound that blends the roll of drums with the tolling of bells. From January 17th to February 5th, the bells of the Sant'Agata church, accompanied by drums playing various rhythms, mark the so-called tammuriniata: a sound that, according to tradition, mimics the gallop of the messenger's horse sent to announce the arrival of Count Roger and his cavalry. It is the Sant'Agata bell-ringing, a sonorous voice that prepares the village for the grand celebration for weeks.

The Grand Historical Pageant

The highlight of the event is the Grand Historical Pageant of the Katàbba, which takes place on the afternoon of the festival Sunday along the streets and squares of the center, with its focal point in Piazza IV Novembre. The costumed parade re-enacts the entry of Grand Count Roger and his princely court into the walls of Monsfortius, featuring the presentation of weapons, keys, and gifts to the sovereign, followed by the evocative lighting of the fire of Christianity.

Medieval atmosphere and entertainment

Throughout the day, the village transforms into a medieval town: musicians, flag-wavers, street performers, jugglers, fire-eaters, and noble ladies and knights enliven the alleys, while archery demonstrations and armed combat displays take place. Local workshops and stalls offer themed markets, and visitors can savor traditional products and themed dishes, from arancini to local bread, and from wine to mint tea.

A festival of local identity

Organized by the Katàbba Association, the re-enactment is part of the "Winter Medieval Festivals" circuit and represents one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of the Province of Messina. More than just a costume party, the Katàbba is the living memory of a community that continues to share its roots, passing down a thousand years of Monforte San Giorgio's history from generation to generation.

Katàbba — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Katàbba - A Thousand Years of History took place on Sunday, January 25, in Monforte San Giorgio (ME), featuring the Grand Historical Pageant in the afternoon. The festival was preceded, from January 17 to February 5, by the traditional tammuriniata and the Sant'Agata bell-ringing, which marked the approach of the re-enactment of Count Roger I's arrival.

The 2026 edition of Katàbba - A Thousand Years of History reached its peak on Sunday, January 25, in the historic center of Monforte San Giorgio, with its epicenter in Piazza IV Novembre. The Peloritani village returned to the Middle Ages thanks to the Grand Historical Pageant, which re-enacted the entry of Grand Count Roger I of Hauteville and his court, including the presentation of keys and gifts to the sovereign.

The village streets hosted flag-wavers, musicians, street performers, fire-eaters, jugglers, archery demonstrations, and themed markets, accompanied by tastings of local products. In the preceding days, starting January 17, the Sant'Agata bell-ringing and the tammuriniata prepared the community for the grand celebration. Free admission.

Practical information — Katàbba

Getting there

Monforte San Giorgio is located in the hilly hinterland of the Province of Messina, in the Peloritani mountains. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits in the Messina-Tyrrhenian area), continuing along provincial roads toward the village. The reference railway station is on the Tyrrhenian coast (Messina-Palermo line), from which you can continue by car or local connections.

Admission and tips

Admission to the event is free. The historical pageant takes place on the afternoon of the festival Sunday: we recommend arriving early to secure a spot along the route and wearing clothing suitable for the winter climate. Please consider parking in areas outside the historic center, given the pedestrian nature of the village alleys.
