The Janara Festival – Esotericism and Magic is the event that brought an entire weekend dedicated to the world of the occult, symbols, and folk magic to the Villa Comunale Serenitas in San Giorgio del Sannio, in the heart of the Benevento province. The event was born from an idea by the Associazione La Janara, which organized it together with the Pro Loco of San Giorgio del Sannio with the support of the municipal administration, choosing as its central theme the most famous figure of the Sannio imagination: the janara, the witch of the peasant legends of inland Campania.

The janara, between myth and Sannio tradition

In Sannio, the janara is not just a fairy-tale character. For centuries, the oral culture of the villages around Benevento has attributed to her nocturnal flights, mischief in stables, knotted manes of horses, and remedies passed down from mother to daughter. The name itself, according to the most widespread hypotheses, refers to the priestesses of Diana and the famous Walnut Tree of Benevento, the tree under which tradition places the witches' sabbath. The festival starts from this intangible heritage to tell its story without superstition, using an approach that alternates historical dissemination, popular anthropology, and contemporary spirituality.

Conferences, books, and meetings

The cultural program is the backbone of the event: over the three days, conferences, themed debates, and editorial presentations led by scholars, writers, and industry professionals take place. Topics include shamanic drumming and journeys, the witches' sabbath, the role of runes and sigils in popular folklore, the janara between myth, magic, and reality, necromancy, emotional rebalancing through plants, energy purification rituals, and the Akashic records. This approach makes the event interesting even for those who arrive as simple curious visitors.

The esoteric market and crafts

Under the trees of the municipal villa, a true themed market takes shape, with exhibitors arriving from all over Italy. Among the stalls, you can find:

• esoteric stands with practitioners dedicated to tarot cards, coffee grounds reading, and symbolic consultations;
• spiritual herbs, oils, essences, incense, and ritual objects;
• local Sannio crafts, costume jewelry, and themed creations;
• books, magazines, and small specialized publishing.

It is the most photographed and popular part of the festival, giving Villa Serenitas the appearance of a small village out of time, particularly evocative after sunset.

Food court, music, and family space

Alongside the cultural section, the organizers set up a food village with craft beers, bar service, and local meat sandwiches, designed to keep the visit going until evening. The soundtrack is provided by live music and radio broadcasts made directly from the event area. There is no lack of attention to families: rides, games, face painting, and creative workshops for children make the festival a destination suitable even for those arriving with little ones, in a green, fenced, and comfortable setting.

A young and traveling event

The first edition took place in San Giorgio del Sannio in April 2025 and received an excellent public response, so much so that in the same year, the format was replicated in other municipalities of inland Campania.
