The regatta that kicks off the J/70 sailing season in the Gulf of Follonica
The J/70 Cup - Marina di Scarlino Leg is the event that marks the start of the J/70 class racing season in Italy. Races take place in the waters of the Gulf of Follonica, right in front of the Marina di Scarlino, in the municipality of Scarlino, Grosseto province, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. The event is organized by the J/70 Italian Class in collaboration with the Yacht Club Toscana, a club long appreciated by sailors for its excellent race courses, organizational efficiency, and hospitality.
The J/70 is a one-design keelboat just under seven meters long, which has become one of the most widespread racing boats in the world in recent years. Its formula—identical hulls for everyone, small crew, and contained costs—has made the J/70 Cup circuit the most attended internationally, bringing amateur owners and top-level professionals together on the same starting line.
The Scarlino leg takes place over a weekend, from Friday to Sunday, featuring a maximum of eight races, with the worst result discarded once the sixth race is completed. It is the first of the legs that make up the seasonal circuit, a calendar that visits other famous Italian sailing waters before awarding the national class title in the autumn.
A compact yet extremely competitive fleet gathers in Scarlino, with crews arriving from all over Italy and abroad. The starting line features experienced owners, renowned helmsmen, and world-class tacticians: the Tuscan leg thus becomes the first test of the season, where the hierarchies that will define the circuit in the following months begin to take shape.
Beyond the challenge on the water, the J/70 Cup in Scarlino is also an opportunity for socializing and celebration. The program includes convivial moments after the races and the traditional crew party, with the fleet gathering ashore to discuss the day's sailing. It is this combination of high-level sport and a friendly atmosphere that has made this leg a highly anticipated event for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
The backdrop is the Grosseto Maremma, one of the most evocative areas of Tuscany: the hilltop village of Scarlino overlooks the Gulf of Follonica, with its tourist port, beaches, and Mediterranean scrub. Attending the regatta means combining the thrill of offshore sailing with the discovery of a land defined by nature, history, and fine cuisine.
The inaugural leg of the J/70 Cup 2026 took place from April 10 to 12 at the Marina di Scarlino, marking the class's return to the Gulf of Follonica after a seven-year absence. A compact, high-level fleet was at the start, featuring prominent crews such as Rowdy by American Richard Witzel, J-Curve by Mauro Roversi, White Hawk by Gianfranco Noè, and g-Spot by Matteo Marenghi Vaselli.
After a strong start by J-Curve, the decisive comeback arrived in the final races: Richard Witzel's Rowdy emerged victorious after eight races, successfully recovering despite an OCS penalty to finish ahead of g-Spot in the final standings. The Tuscan leg thus inaugurated the season, ahead of the circuit's subsequent appointments.
Races from Friday to Sunday in the Gulf of Follonica, over a maximum of eight tests, with a discard starting from the sixth. Ashore, post-race convivial moments and a crew party with tastings.
