The Italian winter triathlon relay championships at the foot of Monte Rosa
In the heart of the alpine winter, the town of Alagna Valsesia, in the Province of Vercelli (Piedmont), transforms into the Italian capital of winter triathlon. Nestled at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif and serving as the heart of the Walser community in Valsesia, the town hosts the Italian Winter Triathlon Team Championships, organized by the Friesian Team and recognized by the Italian Triathlon Federation (FITRI).
Winter triathlon is a spectacular discipline that combines three consecutive segments in the snow: running, mountain biking on snow-covered trails, and cross-country skiing. It is a specialty that tests endurance, technique, and cold-weather adaptability, finding its ideal setting in high-altitude locations like Alagna. The event also features the winter duathlon (running and cross-country skiing), a more accessible yet equally demanding version.
The event has a unique competitive core: the Italian title is awarded using the 2X Team Relay format, where teams battle for the tricolor jerseys in a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled race. Alongside the team championship, the weekend hosts a stage of the Winter Triathlon Sprint Circuit, open to Age Group, Junior, and Youth categories, as well as numerous youth races for the youngest participants.
The program spans two days: Saturday is dedicated to the Winter Duathlon Sprint (running and skiing), with staggered starts for different categories and races reserved for Kids and Youth in the afternoon. Sunday is the highlight, featuring the start of the Italian Team Championship and individual Sprint races, followed by the awards ceremony. The Alagna Valsesia Sports Hall serves as the headquarters for briefings and gatherings.
Beyond the race, Alagna offers one of the most fascinating ski areas in the Piedmontese Alps: cross-country ski trails, exceptional freeriding in the Monterosa Ski area, traditional Walser architecture, and a high-mountain landscape that provides a spectacular backdrop for the event. It is the perfect opportunity to combine winter sports with the discovery of an authentic corner of Piedmont.
Alagna Valsesia can be reached by car by traveling up the Valsesia valley: take the A26 motorway to the Romagnano Sesia/Ghemme exit, then follow the SS299 to the valley floor. The nearest train station is Varallo Sesia, which is connected to Alagna by local bus services.
Gatherings, briefings, and race pack distribution take place at the Alagna Valsesia Sports Hall.
Registration is available online via the www.nextrace.net platform. For information: call +39 335 354958 or email [email protected] (Friesian Team).
As these are high-mountain races in the middle of winter, technical clothing suitable for cold and snow is essential. We recommend booking accommodation in advance in Alagna and the Valsesia area.
