The national gathering of Italian allegorical masks between Parma and Busseto
Italian Masks in Parma and Busseto is the most important national event dedicated to the allegorical masks of Italian tradition. Promoted by the Comitato Maschere Italiane a Parma (Committee of Italian Masks in Parma) together with the Centro Coordinamento Maschere Italiane (Coordination Center for Italian Masks - an association established in Parma on November 28, 2015), the event gathers over 250 masks from 15 Italian regions each year, transforming the Emilian capital and nearby Busseto into a large open-air stage.
The most famous figures of the Commedia dell'Arte and regional folklore parade side by side: Arlecchino, Pulcinella, Balanzone, Brighella, Gianduia, Meneghino, Sandrone, and many lesser-known local masks, each an ambassador of the dialects, landscapes, gastronomic excellences, and historical sites of its territory. Leading the celebration is Al Dsรจvod ("The Tasteless"), the ducal mask of Parma, the soul and creator of the initiative.
The event unfolds over two days. On Saturday, the historic center of Parma hosts the grand traditional parade, with theatrical performances, institutional moments, and the traditional dinner with the masks. On Sunday, the gathering moves to the heart of Verdi's territory, in Busseto, where the masks take to the stage of the historic Giuseppe Verdi Theater, nestled within the Rocca Pallavicino, for a show of sketches, monologues, popular music, and dances.
Among the event's objectives is the transmission of this heritage to new generations: the "Le Maschere a Scuola" (Masks in School) project involves hundreds of children from primary schools in Parma and Busseto, explaining the cultural role of masks as authentic custodians of traditions, dialects, and local identities.
In the heart of Emilia-Romagna, in the province of Parma, between the Municipality of Parma and the Municipality of Busseto, the homeland of Giuseppe Verdi, "Maschere Italiane" celebrates the binomial of traditions and typicalities that characterizes Italian folklore. A colorful, free festival open to all, uniting popular culture, theater, music, and conviviality.
The national gathering Italian Masks in Parma and Busseto 2026 celebrated its thirteenth edition on the weekend of May 23 and 24, with over 250 masks from 15 Italian regions, under the patronage of the Municipality of Parma.
On Saturday afternoon, the historic center of Parma hosted the grand traditional parade starting at 4:00 PM, followed by the institutional moment and the award ceremony for children from the "Anna Frank" primary school as part of the "Masks in School" project. Afterward, a guided tour of the Benedictine Complex of San Giovanni and the traditional dinner with the masks (reservation required).
The event moved to Busseto: from 9:45 AM, the masks reached the historic Giuseppe Verdi Theater, in the Rocca Pallavicino, to perform sketches, monologues, musical moments, and popular dances in their original dialects, in front of a packed audience of masks and citizens.
