The art of wood engraving in Lodi
The "Ugo Maffi – City of Lodi" International Woodcut Competition is the event that celebrates the art of wood engraving in Lodi, the provincial capital in Lombardy. Born from an idea linked to the figure of the Lodi-based painter and woodcut artist Ugo Maffi, the competition is held in the spaces of Bipielle Arte, in Via Polenghi Lombardo, and is organized by the Rotary Club Adda Lodigiano, of which Maffi was a member.
The competition results in an exhibition that gathers woodcut works by Italian and international artists, selected and awarded by a jury. Woodcut, an ancient and refined technique that requires mastery and patience, finds an exceptional showcase here, capable of creating a dialogue between the tradition of engraving and contemporary graphic experimentation.
Now in its several editions since its debut, the competition is a tribute to the figure of Ugo Maffi and, more generally, an act of valorization of Lodi's artistic heritage. Between the inauguration and the awards ceremony, the event offers lovers of artistic printmaking and the curious an opportunity to discover a precious expressive language, preserved and renewed in the heart of Lodi.
The 2026 edition, the sixth, of the "Ugo Maffi – City of Lodi" International Woodcut Competition runs from April 2 to 26 at Bipielle Arte, in Via Polenghi Lombardo. The inauguration is on Thursday, April 2, at 5:30 PM; the awards ceremony on Sunday, April 26, at 11:00 AM. The woodcut exhibition is organized by the Rotary Club Adda Lodigiano, in memory of the Lodi-based painter and woodcut artist Ugo Maffi.
