The first international photography festival held in the halls of the Angioino-Aragonese Castle in Agropoli
In September 2026, the Angioino-Aragonese Castle in Agropoli, in the province of Salerno, will host the first edition of the International Photography Exhibition at the Castle: a festival entirely dedicated to photographic imagery, curated by the Photo ArtCommunity association and included in the Vivi Agropoli 2026 program promoted by the Municipality of Agropoli. The event runs from September 6 to 30, 2026, with evening openings starting at 7:30 PM.
This is the first time the Cilento town has dedicated an international-level exhibition to photography, and the choice of venue is no coincidence: the halls of the fortress overlooking the old town offer a highly evocative historical setting, just steps from the sea. Those who climb to the castle at sunset are rewarded with a dual experience: the exhibition itself and the panoramic view over the gulf from the ramparts.
The Angioino-Aragonese Castle stands on the promontory that encloses the old town of Agropoli and has long been the Municipality's main cultural hub: exhibitions, concerts, re-enactments, and meetings take place here throughout the summer and autumn seasons. Its very name reflects the phases that marked its history, from the Angevin to the Aragonese eras, when the fortification guarded the stretch of coast between the Gulf of Salerno and Cilento.
Bringing a photography festival into these halls means creating a dialogue between two very different languages: the stone of a defensive structure and the fragility of the instant captured by the lens. It is a juxtaposition that many Italian cities have chosen in recent years to enhance their monuments, and which finds its first application dedicated to international photography in Agropoli in 2026.
The photography festival is not an isolated event. In Agropoli, September is the month when the calendar shifts from summer live music to cultural discourse: during the same period, the Cultural September (Settembre Culturale) takes place, curated by the Campania Cultura Association at the Fornace, featuring meetings, presentations, and guests from the worlds of journalism and literature. The Vivi Agropoli program also includes a historical re-enactment dedicated to Duke Alfonso of Aragon, which transports the old town back to its Aragonese era.
Visitors to Agropoli during this period can plan a multi-day itinerary: the exhibition at the castle in the late afternoon, a Cultural September event in the evening, and the old town to be explored on foot among alleys, stairways, and sea views.
As this is a first edition, the complete list of featured artists and entry procedures will be communicated by the organizers in the individual event listings: it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality and the Vivi Agropoli pages in the weeks leading up to the inauguration.
Agropoli is one of the most popular centers on the Cilento coast and the natural gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. In Campania, it represents an interesting case of a city that has built its tourism identity not only on the sea but also on a continuous cultural calendar, supported by the Municipality and a very active local community; in 2027, the city will also be the European City of Sport, a recognition that will bring new widespread events.
September is arguably the best time to discover it: the climate remains mild, the beaches clear out, the restaurants in the harbor and the old town return to a slower pace, and in the evening at the castle, you can breathe the intimate atmosphere that photography requires.
The first edition of the International Photography Exhibition at the Castle is held in Agropoli from September 6 to 30, 2026, in the halls of the Angioino-Aragonese Castle that dominates the old town. The exhibition is curated by the Photo ArtCommunity association and was presented at the end of June 2026 along with the rest of the Vivi Agropoli 2026 program, the schedule of events promoted by the Municipality of Agropoli between summer and autumn.
The announced time for the exhibition events is 7:30 PM, a choice that favors evening visits, when the castle and the old town light up and the temperature on the Cilento coast becomes more pleasant. The exhibition is part of a particularly rich September, shared with the Cultural September curated by the Campania Cultura Association at the Fornace and with the historical re-enactment dedicated to Duke Alfonso of Aragon.
At the time of publication of this entry, the list of featured artists and entry conditions have not yet been released in detail: the organizers will communicate them through the individual event listings and the official channels of the Municipality.
