The first international photography exhibition held within the halls of the Angioino-Aragonese Castle
In September 2026, the Angioino-Aragonese Castle in Agropoli, in the province of Salerno, opens its halls for the city's first International Photography Festival. The initiative, curated by the Photo ArtCommunity association, is a highlight of the Vivi Agropoli 2026 calendar, the program of events promoted by the Municipality of Agropoli that accompanies residents and visitors from the beginning of summer until the end of the tourist season.
This is a first edition: a debut that marks Agropoli's entry among the towns in Campania that dedicate an international-scale exhibition to fine-art photography, rather than just a simple one-off event. The choice of venue is no coincidence, as the Castle is the very symbol of the city and the highest point of the historic center.
Built on Byzantine foundations and repeatedly modified during the Angevin and Aragonese eras, the Agropoli Castle overlooks the promontory that closes the Cilento coastline to the north. From its walls, the gaze sweeps over the Gulf of Salerno, towards Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The interior halls and walkways, now restored and used as an exhibition space and for cultural events, offer photography a context that no gallery can replicate: ancient stone, grazing light, and the sea on the horizon.
Climbing to the Castle means walking through the ancient village of Agropoli, with its narrow alleys, arches, and stairways that lead from the marina up to the 17th-century entrance gate. A visit to the festival thus becomes a stroll through the history of the Cilento region.
September is perhaps the best month to visit the Cilento region. The sea is still warm, the beaches of Trentova and the Baia are less crowded, temperatures become pleasant, and accommodation prices drop compared to the high season. The photography festival fits perfectly into this window, extending the city's cultural life beyond the summer and offering an extra reason to stay for a few days.
Agropoli is also the natural gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and is located just a few kilometers from the archaeological site of Paestum, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its three Doric temples. A day among the temples and an evening among the photographs at the Castle is a combination that works perfectly.
With Vivi Agropoli 2026, the municipal administration has built a calendar that goes far beyond summer concerts, bringing together big names in music and entertainment, film festivals, sporting events, and cultural initiatives curated by local associations. The International Photography Festival represents the most experimental chapter of this program: an attempt to give southern Campania a stable event dedicated to the photographic language, in a place that already attracts thousands of visitors every year.
For the local public, it is an opportunity to see their Castle in a new light; for those arriving from outside, an excellent pretext to discover one of the liveliest cities on the Cilento coast.
The debut of the International Photography Festival occupies the Angioino-Aragonese Castle of Agropoli for almost the entire month of September 2026, from the 6th to the 30th. The time indicated by the municipal program is 7:30 PM, a choice that links the visit to the sunset over the Gulf of Salerno.
The festival is curated by Photo ArtCommunity and is included among the cultural initiatives of Vivi Agropoli 2026, the program with which the municipal administration has built a season with national and international ambitions, as emphasized by Mayor Roberto Mutalipassi during the presentation. In the same month, the city also hosts the Settembre Culturale, from September 1st to 30th in the Fornace spaces.
At the moment, the program released by the Municipality indicates the dates, venue, and time of the festival, while the list of exhibited artists and the sections of the exhibition route have not yet been made public: they will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the inauguration.
Angioino-Aragonese Castle, Via Del Vecchio, 84043 Agropoli (SA), Campania. The Castle can be reached on foot from the historic center: from the port area, you climb through the steps of the ancient village (about 10-15 minutes walk, with an incline). Some parking spaces are located in the upper part of the city, but traffic is restricted in the historic center.
Evening opening at 7:30 PM. For updated hours, visiting methods, and access conditions to the Castle halls, it is advisable to contact the Tourism Office of the Municipality of Agropoli at +39 0974 827436 or consult the official Vivi Agropoli 2026 calendar.
Comfortable shoes for the climb to the village; a light jacket for the evening, as the sea breeze can pick up on the promontory in September. To combine: the Paestum archaeological site, the Bay of Trentova, and the San Marco seafront.
