The world's largest event dedicated to journalism, in the heart of Perugia
The International Journalism Festival in Perugia (IJF) is the largest annual event in the world entirely dedicated to journalism and information. Founded in 2007, every spring it transforms the Umbrian capital into a global crossroads where reporters, newsroom directors, photojournalists, academics, activists, and media technologists meet.
The formula that has led to IJF's success is simple and radical: all events are completely free to enter, with no tickets or registration required. Over two hundred panels, conferences, workshops, and screenings take place in the most evocative venues in Perugia โ the Hotel Brufani, the Sala dei Notari in Palazzo dei Priori, the Pavone Theater, the Morlacchi Theater, the Sala del Dottorato, and numerous other spaces in the historic center โ all within walking distance along the city's medieval acropolis.
Each year, the program addresses the hottest topics in the profession: press freedom and journalist safety, international justice and war crimes, disinformation and fact-checking, but above all the impact of artificial intelligence on newsrooms and the very future of information. The events are held in Italian and English, with simultaneous translation, and are streamed live on YouTube for audiences worldwide.
For five days, the Umbrian city is filled with students, professionals, and enthusiasts. The atmosphere is that of a great collective celebration of knowledge: people move from one hall to another, discuss in the cafes of Corso Vannucci, and listen to Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners just a few meters away. The IJF has become a reference point not only for the profession but for anyone who wants to understand how the narrative of the world works โ and how it is changing.
The 2026 edition of the International Journalism Festival marked an important milestone: twenty years since the first edition in 2007. From April 15 to 18, the historic center of Perugia hosted over two hundred panels, workshops, and screenings, all with free admission. The English-language sessions were concentrated between Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, while the Italian-language events were mainly held in the afternoon and evening. The anniversary focused on three main themes: the Post-AI Newsroom (the newsroom after artificial intelligence), Election Integrity and Global Democracy, and Safety and Impunity, dedicated to journalist safety and the fight against impunity.
Four days of events in the historic venues of Perugia: Hotel Brufani, Sala dei Notari, Teatro Pavone, Teatro Morlacchi, Sala del Dottorato, and other spaces in the city center.
