Elite international equestrian sport in the countryside of Caltignaga
The Sporting Club Monterosa, nestled in the Morghengo district of Caltignaga, in the Province of Novara, has become a key hub for eventing (CCE) in Northern Italy and Southern Europe in recent years. It hosts an international event that effectively kicks off the eventing season in the Po Valley, drawing horse-and-rider combinations from numerous nations.
Eventing is the most comprehensive and demanding equestrian discipline: a single horse-and-rider pair must tackle three distinct phases—dressage, which tests precision and harmony; cross-country, the spectacular outdoor challenge with fixed jumps over varied terrain; and show jumping, which concludes the competition by testing the horse's focus and stamina.
The editions at Sporting Club Monterosa offer various international categories, ranging from introductory tests to the highest levels of the FISE and FEI calendars: typically CCI3*, CCI2*, CCI1* Intro, and categories dedicated to ponies (CCIP2*). The presence of a world-renowned course designer—in recent editions, the Frenchman Pierre Le Goupil, who designed the tracks for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games—attests to the technical caliber of the event.
What makes the Caltignaga competition special is its cosmopolitan atmosphere: riders arrive from France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, and even as far as India, competing alongside Italian talent. For spectators, it is a rare opportunity to witness an Olympic discipline live and free of charge, set against the backdrop of the rural Novara countryside.
Sporting Club Monterosa features spacious warm-up arenas, a fully equipped cross-country course, and all the infrastructure required to host an international competition, including FEI juries, technical delegates, and veterinarians. Throughout the season, the center organizes multiple eventing stages (national and international) between spring and autumn, cementing its status as a cornerstone of Piedmontese equestrian sport.
The 2026 edition of the Sporting Club Monterosa in Caltignaga took place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in a one-day format, combining what was originally planned for the weekend of March 7-8. It was the first international eventing competition of the season in Northern Italy.
On the Novara fields, riders from nine nations—France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, India, and Italy—competed on cross-country courses designed by Pierre Le Goupil, the designer of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games tracks, described as selective but never punitive. The Organizing Committee was chaired by notary Claudio Limontini.
Condensed format: dressage and show jumping in the morning, cross-country in the afternoon. Cross-country courses designed by Pierre Le Goupil (course designer for Paris 2024). Jury: Marina Sciocchetti and Lorenza Volterra; technical delegates John Lyttle (Ireland) and Guillaume Blanc (France); FEI veterinarian Ursula Schumacher.
