A century of art trails, following in the footsteps of Scandinavian painters in the village of Valle Roveto
InQuadrando Paesaggi: A century of art trails is the cultural festival that brings art back to the heart of Civita d'Antino every summer, a small village perched in the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. The event was created to preserve and revive an extraordinary chapter of history: the artist colony that the Danish painter Kristian Zahrtmann founded here between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracting dozens of Scandinavian and European artists captivated by the light and landscape of the valley.
Thanks to Zahrtmann and his students, Civita d'Antino became a significant destination for several decades during one of the most fruitful periods of Nordic painting. The village, its narrow alleys, and the vistas over the valley were captured in dozens of canvases now preserved primarily in Danish museums. InQuadrando Paesaggi reconnects this thread, bridging the memory of that colony with contemporary creation.
InQuadrando Paesaggi is promoted by the Municipality of Civita d'Antino and organized by the cultural associations FEEL and Teatranti Tra Tanti, with the involvement of the Fine Arts Academy of L'Aquila, the Abruzzese Association of Rome, the Palazzo Ferrante Association, and local entities such as Cantina Hulias and Valle in Rete. The festival is sponsored by the Abruzzo Region and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, and is officially presented in Rome at the Campidoglio, highlighting the bond between this small Marsican village and the grand European scope of its artistic history.
Participating in InQuadrando Paesaggi means discovering a lesser-known corner of inland Abruzzo, blending art, nature, and the traditions of the Valle Roveto. Alongside exhibitions and performances, visitors can enjoy tastings of local products and convivial moments, in an atmosphere that combines high culture with village hospitality.
The ninth edition of InQuadrando Paesaggi: A century of art trails takes place in Civita d'Antino (AQ) from July 14 to 18, 2026. The event was officially presented on June 15, 2026, in the Sala Laudato Sรฌ of the Campidoglio in Rome, a sign of the prestige achieved by a festival created to promote the artist colony founded in the village by the Danish master Kristian Zahrtmann.
Among the events announced for the 2026 edition:
The heart of the festival, the Plein Air Art Prize, takes place on Saturday, July 18, 2026: canvas stamping occurs from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM in Piazza del Banco, submission of works by 6:00 PM, and the award ceremony from 8:00 PM. The competition, themed "Civita d'Antino, its landscapes and its folklore," is open free of charge to adult Italian and international artists, using any technique; the winner receives a prize of 500 euros, and the winning work becomes part of the Municipality's heritage.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Civita d'Antino (AQ), postal code 67050, in the Valle Roveto, Abruzzo. Events are spread across the village's squares, historic palaces, and exhibition spaces (including Piazza del Banco and Palazzo Ferrante).
By car: from Rome, take the A24/A25 motorway and the Liri expressway; from L'Aquila and Avezzano, continue towards Valle Roveto. The nearest train station is Avezzano, on the RomeโPescara line, from which you can continue by car or local transport.
