The great festival of choral and polyphonic music in the heart of Fano
The Incontro Internazionale Polifonico Città di Fano is an internationally renowned choral festival that takes place annually between the end of August and the first days of September in the Municipality of Fano, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. Founded in 1974 on the initiative of the Coro Polifonico Malatestiano, the festival has made Fano and the entire region one of the most qualified showcases for polyphonic music, hosting vocal ensembles and conductors from all over the world over time.
The festival brings together some of the best Italian and foreign choral groups, who perform in the most evocative locations in Fano's historic center: the Basilica di San Paterniano, the Pinacoteca San Domenico, and the city's churches and squares. The program ranges from Renaissance polyphony to sacred music, from classical repertoire to contemporary proposals, with major symphonic-choral events, first performances, and collaborations with orchestras.
Alongside the concerts, the festival hosts two important training projects: the European Academy for Choir Conductors and the UT Choral Academy, which each year attract young conductors and singers from various countries to Fano for masterclasses, rehearsals, and final concerts. The artistic direction is entrusted to the composer and conductor Lorenzo Donati.
In addition to the evening concerts, the event offers widespread moments such as the choral marathon and vocal encounters in the historic center, which liven up Fano with flash mobs, moving choirs, and public events. All events have free admission, confirming a commitment to openness and accessibility that has made the festival a benchmark for enthusiasts, tourists, and citizens of the Marche region.
The 53rd edition of the Incontro Internazionale Polifonico Città di Fano will be held from August 28 to September 6, 2026, confirming the late summer event that has enlivened Fano's historic center with great choral music for over fifty years.
Among the announced projects are the new edition of the UT Choral Academy and the European Academy for Choir Conductors, with masterclasses and final concerts. The detailed program, including guest choirs, venues, and concert times, will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event. As is tradition, all events will be free admission.
