The traveling living nativity scene through the alleys of San Gregorio Matese
In San Gregorio Matese, a small town in the province of Caserta overlooking the Matese massif in Campania, the Christmas season does not end with the Epiphany without its most anticipated event: "Il Presepe nel Presepe," a living performance that every January turns the historic center into a vast, open-air stage. The title says it all: the nativity is not built in a single enclosed space but is spread throughout the alleys, arches, and courtyards of the village, which for one night become the very Bethlehem re-enacted by the performers. The village, with its stone houses and narrow passages, is the nativity; the scenes set within it are the nativity within the nativity.
The sacred performance of San Gregorio Matese was born in 1981 and is one of the historic initiatives of the Pro Loco "Le Mura", the association that enlivens the town's cultural life alongside other annual events like MatesEstate. In recent years, the event has adopted the traveling format that characterizes it today, with multiple living tableaux set up simultaneously in different parts of the historic center and a procession that guides the audience from one scene to the next. The organization is managed by the Pro Loco together with the Youth Forum, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Gregorio Matese and the support of the local Civil Protection: a collective effort involving dozens of volunteers and local families.
The performers gather in Piazza Beniamino Caso, the heart of the village, from where the costumed procession begins. Then, the scenes come to life one after another: the Holy Family, the shepherds, and ancient trades reconstructed with tools and gestures recovered from the rural memory of the Matese region. Walking along the route means moving from the scent of bread and burning wood to the voices of the performers, with the living stone of the houses acting as a natural backdrop and the mountains looming behind.
The visit is not just a feast for the eyes. Along the route, you will find food stalls run by local associations and craft markets, where you can discover local workmanship and typical products from the Matese area. It is the simplest way to warm up on a January evening while getting to know a mountain cuisine that, in this part of Campania, remains sober, rustic, and tied to the seasons.
The January 2026 edition was scheduled for Sunday, January 4, but adverse weather forecasts prompted the organizers to postpone everything to Sunday, January 11, 2026, to ensure the safety of the performers and visitors and the overall success of the event. This is not an uncommon decision for an event held entirely outdoors in a mountain village where cold and snow are part of the winter landscape.
San Gregorio Matese is one of the highest towns in the province of Caserta, immersed in the greenery of the Matese and popular in summer for hiking and its cool climate. In winter, the town empties and retreats, which is why the evening of the living nativity has a special flavor: those who have emigrated return, houses reopen, and the alleys fill with visitors arriving from Piedimonte Matese, Caserta, and the entire Matese area. It is a community celebration even before it is a tourist event.
It is best to arrive early, before the procession begins, to find parking outside the historic center and enjoy the setup of the scenes. Warm clothing and comfortable shoes are essential: the route takes place on sloping streets and cobblestones, which are often damp, and you will be walking outdoors all evening. Admission is free, and the event is designed to be enjoyed by families with children.
The 2025/2026 Christmas season closed in San Gregorio Matese with "Il Presepe nel Presepe," presented in the traveling format that has renewed a tradition active since 1981 in recent years. The event, initially set for Sunday, January 4, 2026, was officially postponed to Sunday, January 11, 2026 due to adverse weather forecasts: a decision announced by the Pro Loco "Le Mura" to protect performers and the public and ensure the event's success.
The village's historic center was once again transformed into a widespread stage: from the gathering in Piazza Beniamino Caso to the costumed procession, from the Nativity scenes set up among the alleys to the food stalls and craft markets, ending with fire shows and stilt walkers late in the evening. The event was organized by the Pro Loco together with the Youth Forum, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Gregorio Matese and the support of the Civil Protection.
The original program was scheduled for Sunday, January 4, 2026, and was fully re-proposed on Sunday, January 11, 2026, after the weather-related postponement.
San Gregorio Matese can be reached by car from Piedimonte Matese, the main reference point of the area, from which a mountain road climbs for a few kilometers to the village. From Naples and Caserta, head towards the upper Caserta area following signs for Piedimonte Matese and then for San Gregorio Matese. There is no direct rail connection to the town: the car is the most practical means of transport.
The event takes place in the evening, with performers gathering from 6:00 PM and activities continuing until late. Admission is free; food stalls and markets charge according to the exhibitors' price lists.
