The end-of-year ritual in Sant'Angelo all'Esca: a giant rustic pie cooked over a bonfire in the town square
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, between late November and late December, the main square of Sant'Angelo all'Escaโa small town in the Province of Avellino, deep in the heart of the Campania regionโtransforms into a grand open-air kitchen. At the center of the stage is lo ruoto, a massive copper pot where a gargantuan pastiero is cooked for hours over the embers of a bonfire lit right in the square before the public.
The pastiero is a savory rustic pie from the Irpinian peasant tradition: pasta, eggs, and cheese baked together to form a sort of large, golden, and crispy timbale. In Sant'Angelo all'Esca, the proportions become communal. Local reports mention about 2,000 eggs, 30 to 40 kilos of pasta, and 50 to 70 kilos of cheese, with quantities varying slightly from year to year. Once ready, the pastiero is sliced and distributed for free to everyone present, locals and visitors alike.
The history of Lo Pastiero is tied to the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. During the difficult years of reconstruction in 1983, a group of local friends decided to create the giant pastiero as an opportunity to gather and exorcise the pain caused by that tragic event. Since then, the event has been repeated year after year, becoming the community's hallmark: as noted on the municipal website, the pastiero is the emblem of Sant'Angelo all'Esca, and the entire population identifies with this representation. The event has even been featured in the Veronelli guide.
Around the fire, the day unfolds slowly with tastings, conversation, and folk music. Beyond the pastiero, recent editions have featured other local specialties: pork with peppers, fried pizzilli, and local wine. In the collective peasant imagination, the fire represents the flow of life and the desire to regenerate by burning away what is no longer neededโa propitious gesture with which the town welcomes the New Year.
Sant'Angelo all'Esca overlooks the Calore Valley at an altitude of just over 460 meters and falls within the production zone of Taurasi DOCG: here, Aglianico is king and naturally pairs with the rustic pie fresh from the pot. The village preserves the church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint since 1716, featuring an 18th-century altar, as well as the Church of the Madonna del Carmelo. The area is also known for its olive oil and acacia, chestnut, and wildflower honeys.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Sant'Angelo all'Esca in collaboration with the Municipality. It takes place outdoors, is free, and is open to everyone: families, groups, and curious travelers passing through Irpinia.
The program of the Irpinian Pro Loco associations released by UNPLI Avellino for 2026 includes Il Pastiero of Sant'Angelo all'Esca among the events scheduled for early December, without specifying the exact day. In recent years, the date has shifted between the first Sunday of December and the end of the year: in 2025, the event fell on Sunday, December 7, and in 2024 on Sunday, December 29.
The ritual remains the same: the bonfire lit in the main square of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo all'Esca, in the Province of Avellino, the huge copper pot, the long cooking of the pastiero, and the free distribution to all present. To find out the final date and times for the 2026 edition, it is best to follow the channels of the Pro Loco of Sant'Angelo all'Esca and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
