Rituals, processions, and the 'Lu Recitu' chant in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
In Santo Stefano Quisquina, a small town nestled in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigento (Sicily), Holy Week represents the most intense and participatory moment of the religious calendar. For an entire week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the historic center transforms into a grand space of popular devotion, marked by processions, liturgical rites, and ancient traditions passed down through generations.
The heart of the celebrations is concentrated during the days of the Paschal Triduum. On Maundy Thursday, following the 'In Coena Domini' Mass with the washing of the feet, the evocative procession of Our Lady of Sorrows moves toward the Church of the Carmelo in the silence of the night. Good Friday is the most solemn day: two distinct Via Crucis depart from the Mother Church, with the statue of Jesus of Nazareth, and from the Church of the Carmelo, with Our Lady of Sorrows, meeting in a moment of great emotion. This is followed by the crucifixion at the Calvary, the deposition of the Crucifix, and the evening procession with the urn of the dead Christ.
A defining element of this Holy Week is 'Lu Recitu', an ancient chant in the Sicilian dialect that evokes the sorrows of the Madonna. Its lamenting sections derive from the Stabat Mater, the medieval prayer traditionally attributed to Jacopone da Todi. Singers accompany the processions with poignant melodies, and at the start of the week, the 'Lu Recitu' gathering โ Sicani Choirs โ brings together local groups.
In the days leading up to Easter, the town's churches are adorned with traditional sepolcri (altars of repose), decorated with lavureddiโsmall wheat sprouts grown in the dark until they turn white, symbolizing death and rebirth. Colorful decorations and flowers complete these altars, which are visited by the faithful.
The celebrations culminate in the solemn Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and, on Easter Sunday, in the evocative meeting between the Risen Christ and the Madonna, which takes place in the town squares amidst applause and festivities. A moment that, in recent years, has become one of the most beloved events for the community of Santo Stefano Quisquina.
Organized by the Parish and the festival committee, the Holy Week in Santo Stefano is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Sicani Mountains and one of the most genuine expressions of popular religiosity in the Agrigento area, where faith, music, and tradition merge into a deeply moving experience.
Holy Week 2026 in Santo Stefano Quisquina opened on Sunday, March 29, with the blessing of the palms in Piazza Carmelo and the procession toward the Mother Church, followed in the evening by the 'I Raduno Lu Recitu โ Cori dei Sicani'. The Paschal Triduum saw the Maundy Thursday (April 2) 'In Coena Domini' Mass and the night procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, accompanied by the 'G. Verdi' band and the singers of 'Lu Recitu'. On Good Friday (April 3), the two Via Crucis, the crucifixion at the Calvary, and the procession with the urn; on Holy Saturday (April 4), the Easter Vigils, and on Easter Sunday (April 5), the meeting between the Risen Christ and the Madonna in the town squares.
Santo Stefano Quisquina can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit toward Lercara Friddi) or via the SS189 from Agrigento. The nearest train station is in Agrigento, about 50 km away. The reference airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi.
The rites take place in the historic center, between the Mother Church, the Church of the Carmelo, and the Calvary. Participation in the processions and celebrations is free and open to all.
The evening processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are the most evocative moments: comfortable clothing that respects the religious context is recommended. The village offers traditional trattorias where you can taste the cuisine of the Sicani Mountains.
