In Castel di Iudica, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Catania immersed in the countryside of inland Sicily, Holy Week represents the most intense moment of the religious and civic calendar. For an entire week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the entire community gathers around the Mother Church of Santa Maria del Rosario in a succession of celebrations, processions, and folk rites rooted in the most authentic Sicilian tradition.
The journey toward Easter begins with Palm Sunday, when the blessing of olive branches precedes the procession through the town streets and the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the parish church. In the following days, the liturgy becomes more intimate and is accompanied by one of the town's most cherished traditions: the festival of funeral marches organized by the Associazione Musicale Città di Castel di Iudica APS, whose solemn notes envelop the town, evoking the atmosphere of meditation and anticipation typical of the week.
The heart of Holy Week is Good Friday, featuring the re-enactment of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ followed by the solemn procession of the Dead Christ and the Most Holy Mary of Sorrows. The statues are carried through the streets of the town, accompanied by funeral marches and the meditation of the Stations of the Cross, in one of the most moving and well-attended liturgical acts of the entire year. It is a moment of profound silence and reflection, where devotion and popular culture merge into a single great community experience.
On Easter Sunday, sadness gives way to celebration: the unveiling of the statue of the Madonna del Rosario to the singing of the Regina Coeli announces the Resurrection, while in the afternoon, the Risen Christ and the Virgin are carried in procession until the traditional meeting in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the emotional culmination of a journey of faith experienced by the entire citizenry.
Every celebration of Holy Week in Castel di Iudica is the result of the collective work of the parish, confraternities, associations, and the faithful, who renew an intangible heritage passed down from generation to generation every year. For those visiting the province of Catania and inland Sicily during the Easter period, it is an opportunity to discover a small village capable of expressing, with sobriety and intensity, the most authentic soul of the island's popular religiosity.
Holy Week 2026 in Castel di Iudica will renew the events that have always marked the town's Easter in the province of Catania. At the moment, the dates and detailed program have not yet been released: as every year, the rites will be concentrated in the days from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, around the Mother Church of Santa Maria del Rosario.
As is customary, the blessing of the palms with a procession, the festival of funeral marches organized by the Associazione Musicale Città di Castel di Iudica APS, the solemn procession of the Dead Christ and the Most Holy Mary of Sorrows on Good Friday, and the appearance of the Risen Christ on Easter morning are expected. The official program with times and locations will be released by the parish and the Municipality's channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Castel di Iudica (CT), with the epicenter at the Mother Church of Santa Maria del Rosario and Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
By car: Castel di Iudica can be reached via the SS417 Catania-Gela road, in a central position between the provinces of Catania, Enna, and Caltanissetta. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The rites are free to attend. Programs and schedules are published every year by the Parish of Santa Maria del Rosario and on the social media channels of the Municipality and the Associazione Musicale Città di Castel di Iudica APS.
